- — Jennifer Kaiser/Public Information Officer Vallejo Flood & Wastewater District

Vallejo Wastewater has been working for many months with Solano County deputies and the compliance officer to improve the situation along Wilson Avenue at Highway 37, the site of our Austin Creek Pump Station. This station, along with the creek that feeds into it, ensures flood protection for much of the northern part of Vallejo, and is a critical part of our District infrastructure.

On Tuesday, Oct. 20, we held the first major cleanup since the encampment expanded. We want to thank all the partners who did so much to make this day safe and successful:

• Solano County: Worked with us to organize the event and ensure safety.

• Vallejo Flood & Wastewater Field Operations: Brought two backhoes and operators to remove trash along the perimeter of the encampment, and helped remove a stolen car on the edge of the river bank not accessible by tow truck.

Installed a new, heavier gate at entrance to road to reduce frequent vandalism; performed muchneeded maintenance at the pump station to prepare for winter rains.

• City of Vallejo Public Works: Brought two backhoes and operators to work within the encampment with Vallejo Together.

• City of Vallejo Police Department: Community Services Section worked throughout the prior week to remove more than a dozen vehicles illegally parked on the access road; VPD officers were on site during the event to ensure safety.

• Recology: Donated three 30-yard Dumpsters and one 40-yard Dumpster.

• Vallejo Together: Worked with encampment residents, helping them understand the cleanup goals and encouraging their participation; helped guide City staff inside the encampment so only trash and not belongings were removed. Thanks to everyone who helped with this event; taking a whole of government approach with our nonprofit partners resulted in 24.6 tons of trash being removed, making the area safer and the waterways cleaner. The next step in the cleanup will occur in the next week or so.
