49ers team records at risk to 17-game season

Teams will be able to rewrite record books

- By Cam Inman

The NFL is moving ahead with its 17-game schedule this fall after prying that concession from the players’ union in last offseason’s collective bargaining negotiations.

The league surmised the TV and stadium revenue gained from an extra game added to the schedule, despite possible downsides of unequal homeroad splits, the uneven season win-loss records and another potential chance for regularseason injuries.

The Super Bowl will also be pushed back one week, into midFebruary, rather than moving the regular season schedule up or removing the post-conference championship bye week. Next season, that means Super Bowl LVI at Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium will be held Feb. 13, 2022.

Another major consequence of the choice will be felt by the record books (watch out, Jerry Rice).

Expect warfare on single-season records with the implementation of a 17-game schedule.

Here are the 49ers team records that could be at risk:

Single-season 49ers records: 23 touchdowns (Jerry Rice, 1987); 4,278 passing yards (Jeff Garcia, 2000); 36 touchdown passes (Steve Young, 1998); 1,695 rushing yards (Frank Gore, 2006); 10 rushing touchdowns (six players); 122 receptions (Rice, 1995), 1,848 receiving yards (Rice, ’95); 22 touchdown catches (Rice, ’87); 10 intercep

tions (Ronnie Lott, 1985; Dave Baker, 1960); and, 19 1/2 sacks (Aldon Smith, 2012).

Rookie records awaiting the 49ers’ next quarterback are those held by C.J. Beathard (1,430 yards on 123-of-224 passes, 2017) and Tom Owen (10 touchdowns, 15 interceptions). Single-season NFL records set by then-49ers: most points with no touchdowns, 166, by kicker David Akers in 2011; most successful point-after kicks, 60, by Doug Brien in 1994.

Rice’s career records include 1,549 catches, 22,895 receiving yards, 197 TD catches, and 208 overall touchdowns, plus most games over 50, 100 and 150 yards and most seasons over 500, 1,000 and 1,500 yards.
