Parolee dies after high-speed chase

Victim drives into tree

A high-speed pursuit ended when a 32-year-old Contra Costa man died after driving his car into a tree around 6 p.m. Saturday.

The victim, whose name was withheld pending notificati­on of next of kin, was later determined to be a wanted parolee driving a stolen vehicle from Walnut Creek.

Vallejo police responded to a call from a citizen who reported seeing a man slumped over the wheel of an idling car parked near Redwood Street and Chenin Blanc Place, according to a Vallejo Police Department press release.

Officers reportedly approached the vehicle, spoke to the man and identified themselves. The suspect drove off, leading a high-speed chase that reached 85 mph on Columbus Parkway, according to police.

The pursuit reportedly ended after less than one minute and about a mile when the suspect collided with a tree. Paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
