Vanden High school teen athlete shot
A Vanden High School student and athlete remained in critical condition Tuesday after being shot in Fairfield on Easter, and the suspected shooter subsequently turned himself in to police.
Details regarding the shooting remained slim at press time.
What’s known is that, around 4:40 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to a report of a gunshot victim in a vehicle in the 1000 block of Broadway Street. They located the wounded teen in the vehicle along with another young man but the driver, said to be the suspect, had fled, said Sgt. John Divine.
Officers performed lifesaving measures before the victim, identified by family as Daniel Hughes, 17, was transported to NorthBay Medical Center for treatment of his life-threatening injury.
A Ramey Warrant was issued for the suspect, identified as James Sterling Shawn Williams, 18, of Fairfield.
Williams surrendered to police Tuesday afternoon. He was booked into Solano County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon using a firearm, willful discharge of a firearm with gross negligence, carrying a loaded handgun he does not own, being a minor in possession of a concealed weapon and being a minor in possession of ammunition.
Bail is set at $105,000. Arraignment is set for 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Solano County Superior Court in Fairfield.
The handgun was found at the scene, Divine said.
A vigil was held for Hughes on Monday night.
Loved ones shared their sadness on social media.
The Vacaville Jr. Wildcats, for one, asked for well wishes.
“Please keep Daniel, his family and friends in your thoughts & prayers,” a post read. “He was a vital part of the early years for the Jr. Wildcats. He helped win championships for our organization, was an allstar and represented the Jr Wildcats in the Shrine Bowl back in 2017.”
