Benicia grad Calhoun extends hit streak to nine games for Rangers
Vallejo Omega ties Richmond, 1-1
Benicia High grad Willie Calhoun extended his hitting streak to nine games over the weekend for the Texas Rangers.
Texas beat the Boston Red Sox 8-6 on Saturday. Calhoun, Texas’ designated hitter, was 3-for-4 with a single, double and home run. On Sunday the Rangers beat the Red Sox 5-3 as Calhoun was 2-for4.
Calhoun has been heating up after having his start to the season delayed by a left groin injury.
For the year, he is hitting .347 with an .886 OPS in 13 heading into Monday’s action.
Men’s soccer
VALLEJO OMEGA 1, RICHMOND 1 >> Vallejo Omega FC tied host Richmond Sol 1-1 on Saturday in the National Soccer League’s Pacific Conference play.
Edenilson Blanco scored on a penalty kick to tie the game in the second half.
Richmond scored in the first five minutes of the game.
Vallejo is 1-0-1 after two games.
The team is back in action at 7 p.m., at home next Sunday against San Jose.
Prep baseball
SALESIAN 6, VALLEJO 2 >> The Vallejo High baseball team lost its season opener to Salesian 6-2 on Saturday.
Senior Carson Williams pitched well for the Redhawks, going six innings and allowing just one earned run.
Offensively, sophomore DeAngleo Ashley went 1-for-2 with a solo homer in the fourth inning. Junior David Whitten was 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI.
Vallejo is at Richmond on Friday.
Girls Basketball
AMERICAN CANYON 58, VALLEJO 35 >> The American Canyon High girls basketball team beat Vallejo 58-35 on Saturday in nonleague play.
Trinity Billingsley had 19 points, eight assists, six rebounds and four steals for the Wolves (4-2). Jazmine Fontilla had 18 points and Destiny Evans added 10 points.
Jada Hunter had a gamehigh 26 points for the Redhawks (1-2).
