Fright Fest creeps into Discovery Kingdom
Annual haunt returns to scare up a good time
Normally Donny Vomit swallows swords in the Creepshow Freakshow, but on Friday Vomit became a magician as he made dozens of children disappear. All it took was a little help from his friends.
“Bring ’em out!” Vomit screamed as he unleashed all manner of creatures that go bump in the night during the second weekend of Fright Fest at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo.
Lizbeth Mungia from Vallejo is one of the monsters who is in her fifth year of haunting Nightmare Manor — one of six scare houses featured at the park.
“I’m one of the little twins that killed their parents and all the staff in the house. They have taken over the manor and have went a little crazy,” Mungia said.
Trails of blood ran down Mungia’s head as a mask, via COVID-19 protocol, obscured part of her face. She wore a simple white nightgown as she knelt down in the corner and pretended to cry.
“Nobody used to scare in this room,” Mungia said as she showed off her scare area in a small room of the manor.
Mungia loves the reaction she gets from visitors to the house and even scared her own little sister so badly that she fell on the floor.
“It was amazing,” Mungia said with a cackle.
Fright Fest is great if you love to be scared, but Discovery Kingdom is a family-friendly park so there is plenty of non-scary activities for the little monsters to experience earlier in the day before the spookies are unleashed. Mikayla Oz’s Tricks and Treats Magic Show was one of the performances that drew a young crowd.
Oz has been performing magic since she was 4 years old and flew out from New York with Popcorn Productions to put on a show at Fright Fest.

Oz sold magic wands and took photos with children before sending them off to a nearby trick-or-treat trail.
Oz loves to see the faces of the children light up when she performs her tricks and for her, that’s where the magic is.
Though there are no new houses or scare zones this year, the park is just happy to be open.
“Everything is the same from 2019,” said Marketing & Public Relations Manager Marc Merino. ” What’s new, really, is the fact that we get to have haunted houses and scare zones again.”
According to Merino, Discovery Kingdom was open in 2020 with the modified day-time Boo Fest, but it didn’t have the draw that the scare houses and zones have.
Absent this year at Fright Fest was the physical wristband park-goers would wear to access the scare houses. An electronic pass could be purchased before coming to the park or by scanning one of the several QR codes posted around the main plaza.
As the sun went down, a fog began to shroud the park — probably from the many fog machine strategically stationed around the haunts and scare zones. Screams cut through the night from visitors as monsters began to make their way to one of five scare zones like Mt. Rotting Cemetery and Arachnid Alley.
If you are a Halloween enthusiast, an adrenaline junkie, or just looking for a fun family adventure Fright Fest might be just what the doctor ordered. You can visit the good doctor at St. Hades Hospital, but a word of caution — once you check in, you may never check out.
