American Canyon High football team topples over Casa Grande

The American Canyon High football team upset host Casa Grande 48-30 on Friday in a wild Vine Valley Athletic League contest.

There are now four teams in the VVAL with one defeat — American Canyon, Casa Grande, Vintage and Petaluma.

Without star running back Kaponu Liu, the Wolves were able to score plenty of points and hold off the Gauchos (5-3, 3-1) in the fourth quarter.

James Aken had two touchdown runs and Sean Yumang had a touchdown catch and ran back a kickoff to the end zone.

Quarterbac­k Kaleb Anderson threw touchdown passes to D’Juan Seymore and Yumang and ran in a touchdown himself. Kamel Jones ran in a touchdown to help ice the win.

American Canyon (53, 3-1) hosts Justin-Siena and Petaluma the next two weeks.

Girls volleyball

NORTH HILLS 2, RIO LINDO 0 >> The North Hills girls volleyball team won the Small School Bridge League and finished 16-0 and 12-0 in the SSBL after defeating Rio Lindo, 25-20, 25-10.

Freshman Julianne Gonzales, who was awarded the league MVP, had 13 digs and eight aces against Rio Lindo. For the tournament, she had 12 aces, 25 kills and 30 digs.

Senior Rachel Gaviola and junior Jenna Garcia made first team all-league.

For the tournament, Garcia had 16 aces, 12 kills and 21 digs. Gaviola had 17 aces, 44 assists and four digs. Rochelle Gaviola had five aces and 14 digs.

Women’s volleyball

SOLANO 3, ALAMEDA 0 >> The Solano College women’s volleyball team defeated

Alameda 25-4, 25-7, 25-2 on Friday in Bay Valley Conference play.

“We served tough and our offense was explosive, only two mistakes on our total attempts,” Solano head coach Darla Williams said. “Team served 95 percent with 37 aces. Alameda is a developing team/ program, we were able to stay focused and play solid ball.”

Kailyn Kaiser of Solano served 27-for-27 with 15 aces, while Mylei Moli led the offense with seven kills and four aces. Sammy Brown added five kills and five aces. Dani Rydjord served 11-for-11 with five aces. Chris Rigney Cruz chipped in with four kills and two blocks, while Anaya Rodriguez led with 10 assists

“Kailyn (Kaiser) was a serving machine,” Williams said. “In set three she was our second server and served all the way to 22-1. Overall a full team effort with everyone contributi­ng.”

Women’s soccer MERCED 15, CAL MARITIME 0

>> The Cal Maritime women’s soccer team fell to UC Merced 15-0 on Friday at Bobcat Field.

Despite the loss, junior goalkeeper Maddy Dack finished the California Pacific Conference road game with 30 saves — the fourth-highest singlegame total in NAIA history and the most since 2016 when Life (Ga.) faced Georgetown (Ky.). That total also broke her previous single-game career high of 28, recorded at home against Merced team on Nov. 9, 2019.

By scoring three goals by the 24th minute, the host Bobcats held a lead they slowly extended as this game progressed to secure a 15-0 victory over Cal Maritime at Bobcat Field.
