Cal Maritime sailing team wins Kennedy Cup

ANNAPOLIS, MD. >> After finishing the first day of competitio­n in second place at the 2021 Kennedy Cup, hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy, Cal Maritime erased its six-point deficit against Rhode Island throughout Sunday’s action to win the event by a onepoint margin.

As Cup champions, the Keelhauler­s will now represent the United States at next Fall’s Student Yachting World Cup in France. The eight cadets who led Cal Maritime to this historic victory were Kyle Collins, Jacob Fisker-Anderson, Max Roth, Cooper Smith, Emi Stephanoff, Giovanni Cerrito, Django Tomlinson and Justin Zmina.

Including this championsh­ip, Cal Maritime Sailing has four top-three finishes in five events this season.

In the Kennedy Cup, teams sail a series of races, with team points based on the order the boats finish each race. First place in each race earns one point, second place earns two points, three for third, etc., with the lowest cumulative score capturing the title.

Cal Maritime will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 13 when it heads to Santa Barbara to compete at the two-day Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference Fall PCCs.

Men’s basketball

CAL MARITIME 82, PACIFIC

UNION 69 >> The Cal Maritime men’s basketball team picked up its first win of 2021-22 on Sunday after an 82-69 win over Pacific Union. ERIC NORTON HAD 21 POINTS

ON 8-FOR-14 SHooting and added eight rebounds and three assists for the Keelhauler­s (1-1).

Amil Foster had 20 points on 7-for-13 shooting and chipped in eight boards. Divine Nwoko had 13 points on 5-for-10 shooting and added five boards. Cetrick Yearney added four assists. Collective­ly, Cal Maritime hit half of its shots from the floor (30-for-60) compared to Pacific Union’s .355 shooting clip (22-for-62).

Victor Wariso had a game-high 38 points for Pacific Union.

The Keelhauler­s are back in action Wednesday at Menlo.

Women’s basketball

ALLAN HANCOCK 54, SOLANO 37 >> The Solano College women’s basketball team lost to Allan Hancock 54-37 on Sunday on the final day of the Cosumnes River tournament in Sacramento.

The Falcons (1-2) trailed just 28-26 at halftime.

Zaire Brown had 10 points and seven boards for Solano. Paige Peterson had 11 boards. Cherika Rafan had four assists and three steals.

In a 65-42 loss to L.A. Trade Tech on Saturday, Peterson had 14 points and 12 boards. Solano hosts San Francisco on Tuesday.

Prep cross country

BRUINS EXCEL IN TCAL RACE

St. Patrick-St. Vincent High’s Maxwell Solano (17 minutes,16 seconds) was second overall for the varsity boys in a TCAL meet last week.

Eli Sparks was eighth overall for the JV boys.
