American Canyon boys hoops team defeats Petaluma in OT

The American Canyon High boys basketball team extended its win streak to five games Tuesday with a 68-65 win over Petaluma in overtime.

Senior Mikey Pierce drained a mid-range jumper with a hand in his face with 20 seconds remaining in the extra period. Petaluma had an opportunity to tie the game at the buzzer but the 3-point attempt fell short and American Canyon secured the rebound and the victory.

Pierce scored a team high 21 points for the

Wolves with all but one coming in the second half. In addition to nailing the game sealing shot, he also calmly sank two free throws at the end of regulation to force overtime.

American Canyon trailed much of the game, including early 11- and 12-point deficits, but suffocating defense in the second half led by senior Raekwon Bell put the Wolves back in it and eventually on top.

Senior Khai Curry scored 18 points and Jordan Nolan added 13 points for the Wolves (10-5, 4-0), who look for the season sweep of Vintage on Thursday.

Girls soccer

BENICIA 1, CONCORD 0 >> The Benicia High girls soccer team edged Concord 1-0 on Tuesday in Diablo Athletic League play.

The Panthers (8-5, 3-2) took the 1-0 lead in the first half when Ally Ballinger scored after a pass from Briana Muñoz.

Kate Northen and Kyla Mitchell were in goal for the shutout against Concord (5-4-1, 1-3-1).

Benicia hosts Las Lomas on Thursday.

Boys soccer

BENICIA 1, CONCORD 1 >> The Benicia High School boys soccer team edged Concord 1-1 on Tuesday in a Diablo Athletic League contest.

Cameron Finch had the goal and Nico Ruiz had the assist for the Panthers (57-1, 1-3-1). The Minutemen dropped to 6-2-1 overall, 2-1-2 in league play.

Benicia is at Alhambra on Thursday.

SONOMA VALLEY 7, AMERICAN CANYON 1 >> The American Canyon High boys soccer team fell to Sonoma Valley 7-1 on Tuesday in Vine Valley Athletic League play.

The Wolves (0-6-3, 0-2-2) trailed just 3-1 at halftime. American Canyon is at Vintage on Thursday.
