“From all the feedback we get on a daily basis, people keep saying how glad they are that we're here. Independent Bookstore Day is a way to keep us here.”

Despite the troubling trend that began with corporate behemoth booksellers taking business away from mom-and-pop book shops, locally owned, independent bookstores remain an important cornerstone in their communities.

While the assault from internet-based mega monsters led by Amazon continues to threaten to do away with brickand-mortar businesses, a sense of awareness, appreciation and perhaps rejuvenation surrounding book stores seems to be growing.

“Independent Bookstore Day” will be celebrated around the country Saturday, with special events taking place including readings, parties and any true bibliophile's dream — a wide range of limited edition books and literary items available for sale.

“This is a way to show true appreciation for book stores, we get to show our appreciation to customers, customers get to support us, and keep us in the community, which is very important,” said Karen Finlay, co-owner of Alibi Bookshop in Vallejo.

“From all the feedback we get on a daily basis, people keep saying how glad they are that we're here, Independent Bookstore Day is a way to keep us here.”

Alibi will be open for extended hours Saturday, families can enjoy the return of storytime at 11 a.m., there will be a raffle, and of course, there will be special merchandise for collectors.

“We will have exclusive books, tote bags, children's books, Blackwing pencils, and more — we'll have some book giveaways and fun things like that,” Finlay said.

Other goodies that book lovers will be able to pick up include free bookmarks, buttons and stickers.

“We just want people to come down and celebrate an independent book store, and we get to celebrate Vallejo,” said Finlay. “It's all about community, and it's all about collaboration.”
