Bethel High's badminton team claims TCAL crown

Redhawks have players advance to NCS tournament too

The Jesse Bethel High badminton team's doubles team won the Tri-County Athletic League crown on Thursday.

The team of Leyana Sunga/Alina Pham won every match in two sets and claimed the crown. They advanced to the North Coast Section Tournament at Newark Memorial High School on May 14.

Also advancing were Jesse Bethel's No. 1 mixed doubles team of Czejkier Santos/Cherie Luu, who grabbed third place and the No. 3 mixed doubles team of Jocelyne DeVera/ Luis Hiquiana, who finished fourth.

The No. 1 boys team of Julio Vazquez/Harnaman Kharia finished fourth as well.

Singles players Damon Smith and Damanjeet Singh and girls doubles teams of Lucia Aguirre/Jhadalene Oracion and Raina Sarmiento/Faith Niyi all finished as alternates.

Redhawks fare well at TCAL finals

The Vallejo High badminton team had several players do well at the TriCounty Athletic League tournament. The top three advanced to the North Coast Section tournament.

In boys doubles, the team of Ruben Dapikilla/ John Paul Gutierrez took first place. In mixed doubles, the team of Reynard Nevado/Rachell Ordonez also took first.

In girls singles, Nasia Okungbowa finished in second place. Ricky Dumag Jr. finished in second for boys singles.

In girls doubles, the team of Rachel Contreras/Valeria Guzman finished

second as well. The team of Jemima Wong/Danica Sebastian grabbed third.

Also in boys doubles, the team of John Rey Gawat/ Cyrus David took third.

In mixed doubles, the team of Angeline Harris/ Rodonel Escobar grabbed fourth.

Softball

Benicia 13, Concord 2

The Benicia High School softball team routed Concord 13-2 on Thursday in Diablo Athletic League play.

The Panthers (16-5, 9-1) broke the game open with a seven-run third inning.

Robynn Balmediano was 4-for-4 with two RBIs. Lorenzza Marcacci had two doubles and three RBIs. Kaydence Kinder was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Bre Gomez had two RBIs. Ava Rojas had a triple.

Braxton Brown went three innings and Sinead Maas pitched two. The two combined for five strikeouts.

Benicia hosts Vintage at home on Monday.

Baseball

Acalanes 20, Benicia 4

The Benicia High School baseball team was thumped by Acalanes, 204, on Thursday in Diablo Athletic League play.

The game was 5-4 Acalanes after one inning but the Dons (15-7, 8-2) eventually broke it open with a seven-run sixth against the Panthers (138, 5-5).

Benicia's next league game is Tuesday against Campolindo.

Redhawks grab forfeit win

The Vallejo High baseball team picked up a forfeit win over Richmond on Thursday in the first round of the Tri-County Athletic League tournament.

The Redhawks (12-10-1) travel to Salesian on Tuesday for the next round.

St. Mary's 13, St. Pat's 3

The St. Patrick-St. Vincent High baseball team dropped a 13-3 decision to St. Mary's on Thursday in the TCAL tournament.

The Bruins are 8-16 overall. The Panthers advance to the next round.

Vallejo High golf tournament

Help support the Vallejo High athletic program with a golf scramble at 1 p.m. on May 21 at Blue Rock Springs.
