2 dead following gunfire on I-580
Two people died Wednesday night after gunfire erupted on a Bay Area freeway, according to law enforcement sources.
California Highway Patrol officers responded shortly after 8:20 p.m. to reports of a crash on eastbound Interstate 580 at Seminary Avenue. According to a CHP statement, officers later learned that the vehicle involved in the crash also had been involved in a shooting just before the wreck.
A 21-year-old man died at the scene, and a 22-yearold died after an ambulance rushed him to a hospital, according to a law enforcement source who wasn't authorized to comment and requested anonymity. Both deaths were classified as a homicide, the source said.
The homicides are the third and fourth this year on Oakland freeways.
Two other people inside the vehicle also were injured, the source said. The CHP said some occupants in the car were wounded in the shooting, and others sustained injuries in the crash.
A Sig-alert for severe traffic went out when the CHP closed the Seminary Avenue off-ramp and the farright eastbound lane west of the exit.
Traffic backed up at least to the 35th Avenue exit.
Oakland police also responded to the incident.
The CHP is investigating and urged anyone with information to contact the CHP's tip line at 707-9174491.
