BOCHY RETURNS TO MANAGER GIG, BUT NOT FOR GIANTS >>

Former Giants

manager Bruce Bochy is set to manage France in the World Baseball Classic two and a half years after he initially planned to do the job.

The three-time World Series champion was in line to head up the French team at the 2020 tournament before the pandemic turned the sports world upside down and the Classic was canceled.

Bochy, who was born in Bussac-Forêt, France is rejoining the French national team after stepping away in 2021 for the European Championship, citing health concerns amid the pandemic.

Now he'll aim to help France qualify for one of

four remaining spots in next spring's tournament. Bochy's French team will compete in a six-team qualifying tournament Sept. 1621 in Regensburg, Germany with the top two teams earning a spot in the Classic.

SALE HAS FINGER SURGERY, NO RETURN DATE SET >> Red Sox left-hander Chris Sale had surgery on his broken left pinkie finger, a day after it was hit by a line drive in a game against the New York Yankees.

The team called the surgery successful but did not give a timetable for his return. A broken bone usually takes 4-6 weeks to heal, which would allow Sale to return before the end of the season.

In the first inning of Sunday's game against the Yankees — just his second start since returning from a broken rib — Sale was hit in the hand by Aaron Hicks' 106 mph line drive. The Red Sox starter screamed in pain and walked immediately off the field.
