Vallejo to open warming shelter Wednesday

- By Thomas Gase tgase@timesheraldonline.com

The City of Vallejo announced Tuesday afternoon that it will open an overnight warming shelter for those seeking respite from the cold and rain today, Tuesday, February 28, and Wednesday, March 1.

The shelter will open in the evenings from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following morning.

According to weather. com, Vallejo is expected to have temperatures dip to 34 degrees on Tuesday night, while the rain is schedule to stop on Wednesday before returning on Saturday. The City of Vallejo has said in the past that per its weather policy it would open up a shelter if the temperature dipped below 35 degrees for two straight days.

The shelter will be located in the Vallejo room at 505 Santa Clara Street, on the backside of City Hall, just below the JFK Library.

In a news release, Vallejo thanked its partner, SolTrans, and said that those seeking transportation to and from the warming shelter will be provided with a free bus ride by simply mentioning to the driver that they are “traveling to or from the Vallejo warming shelter.”

Additionally, participants are encouraged to bring their own blankets, although there will be a limited number of blankets and pillows available. In addition, participants will be limited to bringing in one small bag of personal items as space is limited.

In November, the Vallejo City Council voted 5-0 to adopt a resolution authorizing City Manager Mike Malone to execute a purchase/sale agreement, license agreement to purchase property at 1937 Broadway St. for the site of a new navigation center, which has been delayed in the city for years.

This address is on 1.15 acres of vacant and fenced property, purchase of which has been in discussion for two years. It will offer 125 beds for the unsheltered in temporary housing near a major medical center, with public transportation, and public access by city services.
