Will the stars be out on Rush Ranch's `Astronomy Night'?

- By Richard Bammer rbammer@thereporter.com

“It's not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves,” to quote a line Shakespeare's “Julius Caesar.”

Be that as it may, you can hold the stars in your eyes and look at them through a telescope, weather permitting, Friday night at Rush Ranch south of Suisun City.

Local astronomy enthusiast Jon Pannier will share his knowledge and what to look for on Astronomy Night, an event sponsored by the Solano Land Trust, which begins at 8 p.m. at the historic ranch and open space, 3521 Grizzly Island Road.

Pannier also will inform eventgoers about not only what to look for but also provide an update on stargazing news, including the latest information on the Hubble and James Webb telescopes, Di Holokahi, an engagement specialist with the Land Trust, said in a press statement.

The outdoor viewing will begin at dark. Telescopes will be provided. Personal scopes are welcome, but those who bring them should be familiar with their set-up and arrive before dark, Holokahi said.

Children are welcome, but must be supervised at all times. Warm clothing and mosquito repellant are highly encouraged. To protect night vision, flashlights must be covered with red cellophane, available at the ranch, and late-comers are asked to dim their headlights.

Clouds or Inclement weather will force cancellation of the outdoor part of the event.

Admission and parking are free, but donations are accepted.

Rush Ranch is about two miles south of Highway 12 in Suisun City, on Grizzly Island Road.

Registration is required. For more information, email di@solanolandtrust. org or call 420-1041.
