A.C. Funderburg (1928-2021)

Mr. A. C. Funderburg, age 92, of Widener, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2021, at the St. Bernard's Hospital in Jonesboro. He had been in poor health for the past several years.

Mr. Funderburg was born March 21, 1928, in Dubbs, Miss., and was the son of Alfred Clint Funderburg and Grace King Funderburg.

Mr. Funderburg was one of nine children. At an early age he became interested in music. He was exceptiona­lly talented and could play just about any stringed instrument plus a very accomplish­ed drummer. He moved to Chicago where he formed his own band and became very well known in the Chicago music scene. He was a studio musician, so he was called in to play on recordings like Doug Kershaw, The Ragin' Cajun. He played on stage with Carl Mann and Muddy Waters at a Chicago nightclub. After Chicago, he moved to California and worked on farms until he retired back to Arkansas to live out his last years. He never lost his love of music and played his guitar up until the last months when he became sick.

Mr. Funderburg is survived by one son, Stanton Funderburg of Aurora, Colo.; one brother, John Funderburg and wife, Judy, of Centennial, Colo.; three sisters, Bobbie Claudette Christian of Memphis, Betty Crawford of Rogers and Joann Jumper and husband, Gene, of Madison; several grandchild­ren, including a granddaugh­ter he raised, Savannah Funderburg, of Widener; several greatgrand­children and a greatgreat-grandson.

He had three sons, A. C. ' Buddy' Funderburg Jr., Michael Funderburg and Allan Funderburg; four daughters, Donna Chadwick, Nona Funderburg, Janice Funderburg and Lana Susan Funderburg; two brothers, David Funderburg and Charley Funderburg; two sisters, Pauline Patterson and Jeanette Eldridge, who all preceded him in death.

Mr. Funderburg's wishes were to be cremated.

A memorial service will be announced at a later time.
