Mustangs host Comets; P-W on the road tonight

- Fred Conley

Forrest City will host Little Rock Mills tonight for a pair of Class 4A5 conference games beginning at 6 p.m. at Mustang Arena.

On the boys side of tonight's doubleheader, the Mills Comets will provide a tall order for the Mustangs with a pair of 6' 4" players on the court, one 6'5" and a couple of six footers.

The much smaller Mustangs will have to use their quickness to shut down the Comets, who are in their third season as the team to beat in the 4A-5 conference.

Since dropping down to Class 4A and into the 4A-5 conference, the Mustangs are 0-4 against Mills.

A year ago the Comets swept the Mustangs in conference play, holding Forrest City to less than 50 points in each of the two games, winning 64- 48 and 76- 45. Two years ago, in the first time through the 4A-5 conference, the Mustangs lost to Mills 68-63 and 69-45.

Over the past six basketball seasons, four in the 5A- Central and two in the 4A-5, the Comets are 158- 32 overall and 75- 6 in conference games.

On the girls side of tonight's doubleheader, the Lady Mustangs have their best shot at picking up their first conference win of the season against the winless Lady Comets.

The Lady Mustangs are 4- 0 against the Lady Comets, sweeping Mills a year ago, winning by margins of 34 and 43 points and by winning margins of 12 and 14 points during the 2018-19 season.

••••• Having won two of their last three games, the PalestineWheatley Patriots will be looking to make it three out of four tonight, when they travel to Helena- West Helena for a 3A- 6 conference date.

The Patriots are coming off a 44- 31 loss to Jacksonville Lighthouse on Tuesday.

The Patriots' roster took a hit this past week, when the team lost one of their season starters for the remainder of the season.

"We hated for that to happen, but all we can do is move forward," P- W head coach Jim Wallace said. "We still have a good player nucleus and some who are stepping up and playing much better."

Helena-West Helena's starting five are all decent, but beyond that, the Cougars have very little depth. They remain a big question mark for the remainder of the season.

The Lady Patriots have won their last two games, taking victories over Lisa Academy West and getting past the Jacksonville Lighthouse Lady Wolves in conference action this past Tuesday.

Today's four-game set begins at 4 p. m. with the two junior high teams followed by both varsity teams.
