Plenty of movement in this week’s Arkansas Sports Media high school boys basketball poll

Jonesboro moved down one place in this week’s Arkansas Sports Media boys’ high school basketball poll despite receiving more points than it did a week ago.

A panel of sports media from around the state ranked the Hurricane eighth overall in the poll released Monday. Jonesboro had 64 points in the voting after gaining 52 last week, when it was ranked seventh.

Maumelle (13-2) passed both No. 7 Little Rock Parkview (13-2) and No. 8 Jonesboro (13-3) in the overall balloting, moving from eighth to sixth after running its winning streak to 10 games last week.

Those three teams are also ranked first through third in the same order in this week’s Class 5A rankings.

Jonesboro extended its winning streak to nine games last week while beating Paragould, Batesville and Russellvil­le by a combined 119 points at Don Riggs Hurricane Gym.

The Hurricane will play at Paragould tonight before hosting Greene County Tech on Friday.

Magnolia continues to lead the overall boys’ rankings, followed by Little Rock Central, North Little Rock, Bentonvill­e, Bryant, Maumelle, Little Rock Parkview, Jonesboro, Marion and Fayettevil­le.

The No. 1 teams by classifica­tion are Little Rock Central, 6A; Maumelle, 5A; Magnolia, 4A; Dumas, 3A; Marianna, 2A; and West Side Greers Ferry, 1A.

Blythevill­e (20-2) moved from third to second in the Class 4A poll. The Chickasaws, who have won nine in a row, host

Pocahontas tonight.

Osceola (12-2) remained second in the Class 3A rankings.

Other area boys’ teams receiving votes in their respective classifica­tions include Brookland, Class 4A; Manila, Class 3A; Tuckerman, Class 2A; and Ridgefield Christian, Class 1A.
