Residents encouraged to Jazz Up OUR Community

- Katie West T-H Staff Writer

Local residents are encouraged to help jazz up the community during a Jazz up OUR City campaign being sponsored by the Jazz CommUNITY committee.

The campaign is in full swing and residents are encouraged to share photos of themselves picking up trash in their neighborhoods.

"We want to clean up our area before the July 4th weekend," said Alice Miller, chair of the cleanup. "We are going to have a lot of out-of-town traffic coming through the area for the events and we want it to look nice.

"We are basically asking all residents of the city to clean up their yards, neighborhoods and businesses," said Miller. "Pick up trash and mow yards for all the people who are going to be here on July 2."

Miller said the city has placed dumpsters around town to encourage residents to take their larger items to the dumpsters instead of leaving them on the sidewalks or in front of their homes.

"We have had a lot of mattresses left on the sidewalks," said Miller.

Dumpsters are located at the former Rid-out building on Highway 70 West, the former boys and girls club in the Forrest Hills neighborhood, the Forrest City Civic Center and in the Grant Street parking lot.

"We just appreciate residents driving out and dumping their items there so the city can carry it off for us," said Miller.

According to Miller, the dumpsters will be in place through July 5, so residents can also dispose of trash after the holiday.

"We want to take pride in our town," said Miller. "Everybody wants everything to be better, but we all have to do our part to pitch in and help."

Residents may also post their before and after cleanup photos on the Times-Herald’s Facebook so some can be published in the newspaper.
