July activities... Arts & Science Center’s events continues with Second Saturday Family FunDay

The Arts & Science Center will be celebratin­g The Boys and Girls Club’s 75th anniversar­y on Saturday, July 10, 11 a.m.–2 p.m. during Second Saturday Family FunDay. The Center will move this event to the Boys & Girls Club of Jefferson County at 2701 Short Reeker St.

This month’s activity will be creating magic sand. ASC’s Second Saturday Family FunDay program offers monthly handson arts and science activities. The event is free and led by visiting artists, art educators, and ASC staff. Family FunDay is sponsored by The Pine Bluff Area Community Foundation, an affiliate office of the Arkansas Community Foundation Inc.

ASC will host a Healthy Arts Teacher Institute Workshop Series on Tuesday, July 13–Thursday, July 15, 8:30 a.m.– 3:30 p.m.

Day 1: Trauma–Informed Education, Tuesday, July 13 Students experience trauma that impacts their daily lives and learning. By focusing on the mental and emotional health of students, teachers can improve focus, energy, retention, and productivi­ty. Join the University of Arkansas for Medical Science’s Arkansas Building Effective Services for Trauma (ARBEST) to learn about trauma–informed education and how teachers can use the arts to help students develop interperso­nal and intraperso­nal skills.

Day 2: Learning Through

ALL the ARTS! Wednesday, July 14 Enliven learning by incorporat­ing the arts throughout. From classroom management techniques to specific learning activities, this workshop will have teachers painting, dancing, acting, making music, cooking, writing, and more. Participan­ts will rotate through multiple presenters in 90-minute blocks throughout the day for a dynamic and engaging workshop experience.

Day 3: The Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas: Your Learning Resource

Thursday, July 15 Learn what a day at The Arts & Science Center can be like for students and how ASC can supplement and enrich curriculum. Learn how to facilitate students in a discussion on a work of art; how theater can increase students’ confidence and energy; and brainstorm ways ASC can make a bigger impact on teachers and students.

July 2021 Summer Camps

AutoCAD Workshop Saturdays, July 17, 24, & 31

1–3 p.m., ages 12-17 Retired constructi­on manager and company owner Tom Bennett will lead this special camp. AutoCAD is a computer-aided design software for drawing and editing digital 2D and 3D designs. Students will learn drafting principles and fundamenta­ls of AutoCAD.

The cost is $60 for ASC members and $75 for nonmembers. Intro to AutoCAD will take place at The ARTSpace.

Dance Camp, Monday–Friday, July 19–23

1 p.m.–4 p.m., ages 7–17 Bethany Gere, choral director for Woodlawn Schools, teaches this camp. This high-energy class will teach the fundamenta­ls of dance, with techniques that encourage self–expression and help to develop musicality, coordinati­on and rhythm. The cost is $100 for ASC members and $120 for nonmembers.

The “2021 Irene Rosenzweig Biennial Juried Exhibition” will be on display Thursday, July 22–Saturday, Oct. 16, with an opening reception on July 22 from 5–7 p.m.

Juror Deidre Argyle, assistant professor of sculpture at Missouri State University in Springfiel­d, will announce prize winners at 5:30 p.m. including Best of Show, First Place, Second Place, and three Merit Awards.

Artists 18 and older from Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississipp­i, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas submitted a diverse portfolio for Argyle to select from. Accepted mediums included: Paintings, drawings, original prints, fiber art, ceramics, sculpture, and photograph­y. From the selection she chose 34 artists with 37 pieces to be featured.
