Former Mustang wins gold as ABF Champion.

- Fred Conley

Terrell Jamal Woods made his professional boxing debut in 2011 and has been throwing punches for pay since.

The Forrest City High School product has never looked for easy fights and has never turned away a challenge following more than 70 professional fights.

Recently Woods found gold by defeating one of Utah's top fighters to become the current American Boxing Federation (ABF) American West heavyweight champion.

Woods, 31, a 2007 Forrest City graduate, will defend that title for the first time on Nov. 27 in a bout that will be held in Little Rock backed by Flash Productions in what will be his sixth fight for the year.

Woods, a heavyweight contender, formerly classified as a journeyman, scored a big firstround knockout win over Helaman Olguin in Salt Lake City for the vacated heavyweight title.

Woods ended the fight and captured the title landing a big right hand to drop Olguin, a southpaw. The win kept Woods on a winning streak helping his overall professional boxing record.

Last month, Woods ended J.D. Chapman’s unbeaten record by taking a four-round unanimous decision. Before that, in March, Woods, formerly known as “Knockout,” dropped and held Alexander Ustinov to force a decision ending in a draw.

Going into the fight for the vacant American Boxing Federation American West Heavyweight title, Woods said it was a fight he had to win.

Woods is set to face Damian Wills in Phoenix on Sept. 18 with his very deceptive 27-49-9 overall record.

Woods, known as Terrell, his actual first name, grew up in Forrest City and played football for the Mustangs. He is in his 10th year within the boxing ranks.

The first name is not the only change Woods has made. Previously going by Jamal "Knockout" Woods, he now uses "Pretty Boi" Jamal Woods.

Besides the ABF American West title, Woods also holds the ABA Midwest Regional championship which covers several states including Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Texas.

Woods is in the midst of a winning streak that has him 27-99 as a professional boxer and ranked 33rd and in the No. 1 spot in his home state of Arkansas.

Woods started boxing with former boxing instructor and mentor Jimi Hexdrix in a training facility resting between Forrest City and Palestine.

Woods moved to Little Rock recently and is training with Ozell Nelson, who also helped train Jermaine Taylor, with the Central Arkansas Boxing Club.

When asked if boxing was his focus upon graduation from Forrest City, Woods said he began boxing during his senior season.

"I decided to stick here in Forrest City, even though I had the option to go to Arkansas State on a football scholarship," Woods added.

Woods played for former Forrest City head coach Scott Reed during his junior and senior seasons.

"I'm back training in Forrest City preparing for the November bout," Woods said.
