Game tonight could decide championship for junior high

- Fred Conley

Tonight's junior high football game at Wynne is just about as big as a game can be.

The Forrest City Junior Mustangs have a chance to win and create no less than a threeway tie for the 5A-East conference title.

Tonight's game is quite possibly the biggest game of this season so far for Chris Siler's Junior Mustangs who bring a 6-2 overall mark into the game and a 4-1 mark in the conference to face the unbeaten Junior Jackets (8-0 and 5-0).

"That would be a very fair statement," Siler said by text last night.

Wynne has won the last five straight matchups over the Junior Mustangs, whose last victory over a Wynne junior high team came in the 2015 season, under then head coach Stan Siler.

A Forrest City win tonight would create a tie with the Junior Jackets which could also include the Valley View junior high team that slipped past the Junior Mustangs 27-14 on Sept. 30.

In conference play, the Junior Mustangs have defeated Greene County Tech, Nettleton and Batesville on the road.

"Each of those games are always tough and even tougher when you have to play them on the road at their place," Siler added. "Our guys have been road warriors this season, going undefeated in those road games."

According to KWYN's Lindell Staggs, a Wynne victory over Forrest City tonight and the earlier season win over Valley View, will give the Junior Jackets the outright conference title, even if there is a three-way, based on head-to-head games. A Forrest City victory could leave all three teams with one conference loss and the conference title would be based on points for third place and head-to-head between the top two.

Either way the head coaches, players and fans slice it, tonight's game should be the biggest game of this season for the Junior Mustangs.

Following tonight's game, the Junior Mustangs will host Brookland on Thursday, Nov. 4, in the season finale.

Tonight's game is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m., at Yellowjacket Stadium in Wynne.

The Forrest City varsity Mustangs will host Wynne Friday for Senior Night activities at Sam Smith Stadium.

The last Forrest City win over a Wynne team came during the 2019 season, a 33-16 victory.

Last season, the Yellowjackets took a one sided 49-15 win over the Mustangs.
