Mustang basketball teams will host Mustang Madness

- Fred Conley

Forrest City Lady Mustang coach and former Lady Mustang player and graduate Caronica Randle Williams will be bringing some fun to Dwight Lofton Mustang Arena on Wednesday when her Lady Mustang team and Marcus Britt's Mustang team each engage in the "Mustang Madness" Blue-White preseason scrimmage game.

"My goal and what I'm trying to do is bring fun to Forrest City through the game of sports," Williams, who is entering her second season as the Lady Mustangs coach said. "Being right here off I-40, to me Forrest City is just a great pit stop for travelers and residents who are just looking to have a little fun. Wednesday begins with the basketball fans."

Both teams will play two, 10minute quarters using a running clock.

"We will divide our teams into two teams and go against each other," Williams, who will coach one of the teams said. Her assistant Shonda Moore will coach the other team.

Same for Britt's Mustang team. Britt will coach one of the teams while newly hired assistant coach and former Mustang player Trey Thompson will coach the other team.

The Wednesday night activities, which will begin at 6 p.m., will also include the junior high and high school cheer teams as well as the minicheerleader squad to perform like they have done this season during halftime of the home football games. The Mustang band has been invited to to perform at the Wednesday night event.

Jim Bailey is scheduled to bring one of his Fireballer basketball teams to play a 15minute scrimmage game followed by the introduction of Forrest City junior high basketball teams.

Williams is also hoping to have a three-point shootout and a half court shot competition during the night.

The two varsity scrimmage games will conclude the activities with the girls playing first and then the varsity boys.

"Our hope is that this format will allow every team member a chance to get into the scrimmage game and play," Williams added. "And hopefully it will give the fans a chance for a glimpse at what they will be seeing during the upcoming season."

Admission to the Wednesday night "Mustang Madness" event will be $1 plus one canned food item.

The Lady Mustangs are scheduled to open the 2021-22 regular season schedule on Nov.8, when they host Osceola. Cross County will visit the Lady Mustangs for a Nov. 11 home game.

The Lady Mustangs will once again participate in the Mount St. Mary's "Heavenly Hoops" senior girls tournmament, Nov. 15, 17 and 20th at Mount St. Mary's in Little Rock.

The Mustangs, under first year head coach Marcus Britt, will also open the regular season on Nov. 8 by hosting Osceola.

The Mustangs will follow that game by hosting Newport on Nov. 16 before opening play in the Rumble on the Ridge Thanksgiving tournament Nov. 25-27.

The eight-team Rumble field has been completed and includes six Arkansas teams, Little Rock Hall, Paragould, Marion, Marianna Lee, Blytheville and Forrest City along with two Tennessee teams, Arlington and Ridgeway.
