Lady Mustangs return to MSM tourney for 19th consecutiv­e year

The Forrest City Lady Mustangs will open play today at the Mount St. Mary's Heavenly Hoops basketball tournament in Little Rock when they take on Nashville in a 7 p.m. game tonight.

The Lady Mustangs will face either Pulaski Academy or Hot Springs in second round play on Wednesday.

Forrest City will be making its 19th appearance in the eightteam, three-game guarantee tournament.

Last year's tournament was cancelled due to the pandemic.

The Lady Mustangs first played in the tournament during the 2002-03 season under then head coach Sue Jayroe finishing 1-2. Jackie England's Lady Mustang teams went 9-6 in five appearance­s at the tournament from 2004 through 2009.

Bobby Harris took six different Lady Mustang teams to the tournament from 2009 through 2015 and Erica Taylor coached lady Mustang teams in the tournament from 2016 through 2020.

First round tournament games will be played today with second round games scheduled for Wednesday. All final round games will be played on Saturday, Nov. 20.

The Lady Mustangs go into the MSM tournament with a 2-0 record after defeating Osceola and Cross County last week.

Following the MSM tournament, the Lady Mustangs will host Blythevill­e on Tuesday, Nov. 30.

The Forrest City Junior Mustangs opened their season last week with home victories over West Memphis East and Blythevill­e.

The junior boys opened play Saturday at the Beebe Badger Tournament which runs through Thursday. The Junior Mustangs will host Newport on Tuesday at Dwight Lofton Arena for an eighth and ninth grade game followed by the varsity Mustangs.
