Junior Patriots defeat McCrory, prepare for tournament games

In prep basketball games played this week, the PalestineW­heatley Junior Patriots defeated McCrory 41-27 in a game Tuesday at McCrory.

Grant Ball led with 12 points while Blaine Brown added 11 and had six steals to propel the Junior Patriots to 7-1 for the year.

Palestine-Wheatley is scheduled to host Brinkley today for a four-game set beginning at 4 p.m. On Monday, all four P-W teams will be on the road for a four-game set at Des Arc.

The Patriot Freedom Tournament begins Dec. 28 with the senior boys and girls teams playing first round games at Bald Knob. The tournament action shifts back to PalestineW­heatley for game on Dec. 29 and 30.

Forrest City played four games Thursday at Marianna with the Lady Mustangs taking a one-sided 70-5 win over the Lady Trojans.

The Lady Mustangs will next play at the varsity girls HelenaWest Helena Classic Monday through Wednesday, Dec. 20-22.

The Forrest City junior high basketball teams will return to the court on Jan. 3.

The Mustangs are scheduled to play in the Poplar Bluff Showdown which runs from Dec. 27-29.

The Showdown, like most of the tournament­s a year ago, is back up and running after being sidetracke­d by covid last December.

In the Battle of the Border, Highland earned a place in the boys’ championsh­ip game of the Battle of the Border tournament with Wednesday’s 61-51 victory over Sloan-Hendrix.

In other boys games played Wednesday, Viola routed Koshkonong, Mo., 73-26 and Mammoth Spring edged Hillcrest 55-49 in double overtime. Andrew Jones scored 15 points, followed by Gavin Boddie and Brayden Cray with 13 each for the Bears.

In girls’ games Wednesday, Alton, Mo., defeated SloanHendr­ix 46-45 and Hillcrest defeated Koshkonong, Mo., 5613.
