- Fred Conley

The Forrest City Junior Lady Mustangs used a 15-to-1 run in the second quarter to turn Monday's conference game against visiting Joe T. Robinson to their favor.

Trailing early, the Junior Lady Mustangs went in front 13-12 with just over four minutes left in the opening frame. Starting fast in the second quarter, the Forrest City girls ran to a 22-13 lead at the half and then used a 9 to 4 stretch in the third period to lead 33-7, eventually securing a 46-26 win over the Robinson junior girls.

Forrest City improves to 11-4 overall for the year and are sitting at 7-1 in the conference, their only loss in league play coming against Stuttgart earlier this season.

The Junior Lady Mustangs are coached by former Forrest City Mustang Teraye Lee with help from his dad Tarzan Lee.

"I feel like these young ladies have put themselves in a great position for success," Lee said via text. "My dad agrees with that, and we both think they have a chance to win the ninth-grade girls conference title."

Avienne Applewhite led all scorers with 16 points while Dashia Bradley finished with seven points.

The Junior Lady Mustangs will look to add to their winning ways Thursday when they face eStem Village in Little Rock, the second time for the two schools to face each other. Forrest City won the first conference match against the Junior Lady Mets and are hoping to make it a clean sweep with a Thursday win.

"We are very blessed to have the success we have had so far this season," Lee added. "We believe our players are experiencing firsthand the fruits of their hard work."

The junior boys game began on the wrong footing for the Forrest City Junior Mustangs, who were tagged with two technical fouls before either team could find their rhythm against visiting Joe T. Robinson.

That led to a 3-1 Robinson lead before the Junior Mustangs found their lane and went in front 4-3 which ultimately led to a 14-5 lead to begin the second frame.

Jamarion Morris led the Junior Mustangs with 13 points, four of that in the second frame that helped lead to a 20-14 lead at the half.

Forrest City outscored Robinson 21 to 20 in the second half to nail down the 40-35 home win.

The Forrest City Varsity Mustang and Lady Mustangs return to the road tonight making the trip to Little Rock to take on Joe T. Robinson in a 4A-5 conference doubleheader.

The Mustangs, unbeaten in conference play, will be looking to notch their seventh straight conference win tonight to remain in first place in the boys conference standings.

This season's win streak is the longest for a Mustang team since the 2015-16 season when that team put together a 14-game conference win streak to finish unbeaten in the 5A-Conference earning the top seed into the Class 5A state playoffs and eventually winning their second state title by defeating Hope, Pulaski Academy, Hot Springs and then Maumelle in the state title game, a 91-85 overtime affair.

The Lady Mustangs hope to rebound from Friday's lopsided loss to Pulaski Academy with a win tonight at Robinson.

Both teams will play at eStem Friday and at Wynne on Feb. 1, before closing out the conference portion of their schedules with five consecutive home games.
