Complaint about library worker’s T-shirt leads to dress code policy

The Forrest City Public Library Board is considering updating its dress code policy to promote public confidence and respect for the library.

Board member Judy Sweet recommended the board contact the St. Francis County Extension service for guidelines regarding qualifications for different categories of dress for a clearer description of what employees would be expected to wear.

"They had a booklet at one point that listed different descriptions of business casual and dress casual and such," said Sweet.

The update to the policy came about after the facility received a complaint from someone regarding an employee wearing a T-shirt with graphics.

"I think instead of policing the action, we just decide on a dress code as a board and hand out the new dress code policy," said Sweet.

Board chair Lindsay Hodges and member Briuana Green agreed.

“Yes, we could also offer examples," said Hodges.

“That would make it easy for people to understand," agreed Green.

In other business, library director Arlisa Harris announced the library recently received a donation from the First Methodist Church's Holy Grounds Community Coffee House in the amount of $160.

"They were only open 13 days that month so that's pretty impressive," said Harris. "I'll get a thank you letter out to them."

Harris also told board members she would have to send them the library’s correct financial report via email after it was unavailable at Monday’s meeting.

She also noted the library is considering purchasing land north of the facility.

"We've talked to the owners,” said Harris. “The land was assessed for around $7,000, but they are wanting $15,000 to $17,000 for it.”

Sweet recommended the board first reach out to local realtors to discuss the land before agreeing to offer or enter into any amount, to which the board unanimously agreed.

Harris also said Sheila Gracey, the library’s children and youth services coordinator, is working on programs for next week when area children will be on spring break. Gracey is also developing this year’s summer reading program.
