Shootout in FC leaves man dead, woman injured

Police: Over 100 rounds of ammunition fired during incident on Cherry Street

-

Over 100 rounds of ammunition were fired overnight Saturday during a shooting on Cherry Street that left one man dead and a woman injured.

Four residences and four vehicles were also reportedly damaged by gunfire that began about 1:25 a.m., Sunday, according to a report on file at the Forrest City Police Department.

Officers reported they were outside the department’s headquarters on Rosser Street when they began hearing gunfire. In the report, officers noted the “shooting began in rapid succession” and continued for an extended period of time, estimating about 100 shots were fired in under two minutes.

As the officers began driving toward the gunfire, dispatchers notified them they had received several 911 calls from residents on Cherry Street.

Outside a home at 918 Cherry St., officers found Douglass Lamont Logan, 22, 842 Wooddale, Forrest City, dead from a gunshot wound to the head. The second victim, Sumayah Sayed, 24, was shot while inside her home at 947 Cherry St., police reported.

Sayed was struck in the back of her neck when a bullet was fired into her home, officers reported. She was airlifted to Regional One Medical Center in Memphis where she was treated and later released Sunday, according to the Med.

According to the police report, people at the scene told officers “multiple occupants” inside two vehicles were driving on Cherry Street when they “simply opened fire.”

One officer noted in a report that while walking along Cherry Street he observed numerous spent shell casings which appeared at that time to number possibly in the “double and triple digits.”

As investigators worked the crime scenes, over 100 pieces of evidence, the majority being shell casings, were collected, indicating an “extensive exchange of gunfire had occurred.”

According to the report, a Lincoln Town Car, a Chevrolet Camaro, a Ford and a Dodge Challenger were struck by gunfire. Residences at 922 and 929 Cherry Street were damaged by gunfire as were 918 and 947 Cherry Street.

Forrest City Police Chief Deon Lee said officers are still “trying to piece together” what led to the shooting Saturday night.

“These idiots want to go out and shoot at one another and not take another person’s life into consideration,” said Lee. “The problem is with those weapons, which are mostly assault rifles. Until those weapons are fired or involved in a crime, they’re not illegal with the new gun laws. It’s not illegal for them to have them.”

Logan’s death is the fourth murder to occur in Forrest City this year and the third within the past month.

Lee said officers are continuing to investigate the shooting this past weekend as well as those from April 4 and April 17.

On April 4, Stedman Smith, 27, was shot and killed outside an apartment complex on South Washington Street, and on April 17, Shaqueea Wilson, 31, died after being shot inside a club on South Division Street. Lee said police have warrants and have identified other suspects in the murder cases.
