ASPSF awards spring scholarships to 29 single parents in Delta

-

The Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund, or ASPSF, has announced its spring scholarship recipients for St. Francis, Crittenden, Cross, Lee, Monroe, Phillips and Prairie counties.

ASPSF awarded over $40,000 in scholarships to 29 single parents pursuing associate degrees, bachelor’s degrees and skilled-trade certificates.

Fifteen of these single parents were honored at an awards ceremony recently held at the Woodruff Electric Cooperative Community Room

Local volunteers Sherry Breckenridge and Joanne Smith assisted with the event.

A financial literacy workshop was presented to the scholarship recipients by Anthoney Blake of Cross Bank in Wynne. Students learned about budgeting, credit scores and steps towards home ownership.

“Being a nursing student while juggling the responsibilities of being a single parent can be challenging, but your support has lifted an enormous burden off my shoulders. With this scholarship, I can focus on my studies and provide a better future for my child,” shared one of the recipients.

The single parent scholarships were awarded to: Ariel N., Astria Powell, C.M., Kimberley B., Mydaisha Smith, Nakiyah O’Braint, Shakyla Brown and Tamilya B., of St. Francis County;

Alexia Allen, Angel Coleman, Aquarius Brown, Channel W., Destin Dunlap, Jasmine Bruin, Keondria J., La Shala Dixon, Raven J., and Rhemia L., of Crittenden County; Bailey Birge and Lakisha O. of Cross County; A.B. and Aulexis Palmer of Lee County; Brittany C. and K.T. of Monroe County; Cambra Clements, Chasity Tyler, Domonique Murry and Lindsey H. of Phillips County and Brittany T. of Prairie County.

ASPSF’s flexible scholarship of up to $1,600 helps single parents pay for the biggest financial obstacles to obtaining a degree that leads to a career with familysupporting wages. The monetary aid is paired with mentoring, financial instruction, and career coaching – the soft skill training that transforms students into sought-after employees.

Over the past decade, the nonprofit has distributed more than $795,000 in scholarships to over 800 single parents in the ASPSF East Region.

This investment not only strengthens communities with viable economic impact but also emboldens entire families to imagine a brighter future.
