Forrest City recorded its first murder of the year on Thursday night when a subject was shot in a parking lot outside duplexes on Wolfe Street.

The murder was followed by a shooting Sunday morning on Roosevelt Street.

About 11:35 p.m., Thursday, officers with the Forrest City Police Department responded to calls of shots being fired in the 200 block of Wolfe Street where they discovered the body of Samuel Haggins, 27, 113 E. Cook St., Forrest City, in the parking lot.

Numerous witnesses, during interviews with police over the weekend, told officers a birthday party was taking place at the complex when gunfire broke out.

Witnesses told police that a large crowd had gathered at the complex for the birthday party, although the celebrants claimed to officers that they did not know all of the subjects who attended.

Witnesses also identified a possible suspect, who police reportedly spoke to over the weekend, although an arrest in the murder has not yet been made.

During the investigation, officers recovered several spent 9mm shell casings along with a Rugar 5.7 caliber handgun casing, liquor bottles and other items.

After securing a search warrant, officers found a Glock 19 with a magazine and a Rugar 5.7 with magazine in an attic. According to the report, an officer noticed insulation on top of a closet shelf, indicating someone had recently opened the access panel to the attic. When the officer looked inside, he found the two weapons, which were each reportedly “chambered with a live round.”

Inside the residence at 223 Wolfe St., police also found several plates of food scattered on the living room floor, appearing as though people “had to leave the residence in a hurried pace.”

All of the evidence has been submitted to the Arkansas Crime Lab.

According to police, Haggins had been shot between the eyes and in the right check in the parking lot at the complex. Near his body, police recovered six 9mm shell casings. A 5.7 shell casing was located in the grass closer to the duplex.

Witnesses told police they heard a subject arguing with Haggins about money before the shooting.

Haggins body has also been sent to Arkansas Crime Lab for autopsy.

Sunday’s shooting occurred about 9 a.m.

Tyler Horton, 18, 205 Seaton Cove, Forrest City, was shot in both legs during an altercation that occurred near the Roosevelt and Farley intersection. Officers recovered numerous 9mm shell casings at this location.

According to the report, the city’s Shotspotter system notified officers of a shooting near 1232 Farley St., where they found a black male lying on the ground.

Horton told police his alleged assailant was wearing a blue ski mask and fled toward Victoria Street after shooting him.

Horton was transported to Forrest City Medical Center where medical personnel determined he had been shot twice in each leg as well as his abdomen. He was airlifted to the
