What to wear to the beach in 2019

- BY PATRICIA LETAKIS

Here’s what to look for when shopping for your next swimsuit. Shades of yellow top the color spectrum this season. Solids with striped bands are showing up for a sporty look. High-waisted bottoms give two-piece suits fresh appeal, and if one-piece suits are more your style, expect plunging necklines. Ruffles and flounces are still popular, along with a newer detail: the knot. Anyone looking for protection from the sun will find rash guard-style suits as fashionable as ever.

1 TAKE THE PLUNGE

A crisp black edge adds contrast to the white Malia Ruffle V-Neck One-Piece ($168) by Robin Piccone. The swimsuit’s deep plunge gives it a touch of sexy styling, and its wide straps create an interesting shoulder treatment. Lace-up back ties make it an easy fit regardless of your body type. Available at Everything But Water in Periwinkle Place on Sanibel; everythingbutwater.com; robinpiccone.com.

2 SPORTY AS EVER

This two-piece suit is part of the Refine collection by Becca by Rebecca Virtue. The Textured Bralette Bikini Top ($78) combines basic black with a color-block band under the bust and has adjustable straps. Pair it with the Textured Hipster Bikini Bottom ($68) with a stylish snap front design. The suit’s ribbed fabric adds dimension to the look. 3 BARE SHOULDER

The Island Sculpt One-Shoulder Flounce One-Piece Swimsuit ($179) by Tommy Bahama is not only a showstopper, but it’s also feminine, subtly sexy, and has adequate coverage for comfort, plus a hidden slimming panel for tummy control. Go colorful with Caledon Sea green or basic with black. Available at Tommy Bahama at Coconut Point; tommybahama.com.

4 THE SWITCH

It’s almost like getting four for one with this Palm Party swimwear combo from Tommy Bahama. Start with the Reversible Halter Bikini Top ($99), then add the Reversible Hipster Bikini Bottom ($75). One side is blue stripes and the other side is a fauna print. The bikini top has tall cups that provide great coverage and comfort. Available at Tommy Bahama at Coconut Point; tommybahama.com.

5 VINTAGE

The Origami collection from Becca by Rebecca Virtue combines ruching and slit-style cutouts to give it an origami-inspired look. But it’s the ever-so-chic retro styling in the Origami Vintage Bandeau ($68) and the Origami Vintage Pant with its high waist ($74) that puts this suit on the must-have list for anyone who’s a serious fashionista. Available at cameowaterwear.com.

6 TIE A KNOT

You’re going to see a lot of knot detailing in his season’s swimwear. The Color Play One-Piece with Knot ($128) from Becca by Rebecca Virtue offers the softness of crochet with sheer insets, peek-a-boo styling accented by the knot front, and a high-leg cut. A crisscross back that ties adds interest and a better fit. The swimsuit comes in merlot, black and navy. Available at nordstrom.com.

7 SAY NO TO SUNBURN

The Trina Turk brand is known for its colorful, contemporary designs. Turk, a California local, doesn’t hesitate to bring the vibrancy of life in the Golden State into her swimwear with flower-inspired patterns. Imagine yourself on a paddleboard gliding across the Gulf waters in this Shangri-La Floral Paddle Suit ($166). And if jade isn’t statement-making enough, it also comes in a striking orange print.
