Columbia Pictures 100th Anniversary THE DAILY COMMUTER
TCM, beginning at 8 p.m.
As Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Wednesday night salute to Columbia Pictures, which celebrates its centennial this month, continues, we move into some of the studio’s notable productions of the 1980s and ’90s. Leading things off is Gandhi (1982), the epic biographical drama based on the life of Mahatma Gandhi, played by Best Actor Oscar winner Ben Kingsley. The film won seven other Academy Awards out of its 11 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director (Richard Attenborough). Following that is another acclaimed drama: Philadelphia (1993), which earned Tom Hanks the first of his two consecutive Best Actor Oscars, and garnered Bruce Springsteen a Best Original Song Oscar for “Streets of Philadelphia.” The lineup continues early tomorrow with the crime thriller One False Move (1992), starring Bill Paxton, Cynda Williams and Billy Bob Thornton, who cowrote the screenplay; and The Last Emperor (1987), the epic biographical drama about the final emperor of China that won all nine of the Academy Awards for which it was nominated, including Best Picture, Director (Bernardo Bertolucci) and Adapted Screenplay (Bertolucci and Mark Peploe).
