3 dead, several injured in early morning shooting in Arkansas

JONESBORO, Ark. – Three people were killed and several others injured early Sunday when a shooting broke out at a private party in Arkansas, police said.

Officers found multiple gunshot victims when they arrived at the scene near Jonesboro’s downtown area around 5 a.m. Sunday, Jonesboro police said in a Facebook post.

A man and woman, who police said were acquaintan­ces of the shooter, were killed, police said. The shooter also died. Another woman, who was also an acquaintan­ce of the shooter, was injured.

Police haven’t said what may have led to the shooting, or provided updates on the people who were taken to the hospital.

Swiss rescue authoritie­s search for 6 skiers missing in the Alps

GENEVA – Rescue authoritie­s have launched a search for six cross-country skiers missing in the Swiss Alps in difficult weather conditions, police said Sunday.

Police in the canton of Valais said in a statement that the search began on Saturday between the resort of Zermatt and the village of Arolla, near the border with Italy.

“The group began its tour on Saturday in Zermatt and was later reported missing in the Tête Blanche area,” the police statement said.

Driver arrested after crashing car into gates of Buckingham Palace

LONDON – A driver who plowed into the gates of Buckingham Palace has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, London police said Sunday.

Metropolit­an police said the crash early Saturday morning was not considered terrorism-related and no one was injured.

The driver was arrested by armed officers and held under the Mental Health Act after being taken to a hospital. He has since been released on bail.

Metal fencing was placed in front of the entrance to the palace and the gates were boarded up Sunday as tourists strolled past in the rain.

Turkish police detain 33 accused of plotting attacks, official says

ISTANBUL – Turkish police detained 33 people suspected of ties to the Islamic State group who were allegedly preparing attacks ahead of the country’s local elections later this month, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said Sunday.

The suspects were “preparing and searching for action before the upcoming local elections,” he posted on X, formerly Twitter. Nationwide elections are due to be held on March 31.

Counter-terrorism police in Sakarya in northwest Turkey recovered weapons, cash and “organizati­onal documents” during raids.

“We will not tolerate any terrorists. We will continue our fight uninterrup­tedly with the superior efforts of our security forces,” Yerlikaya said.

PADANG, Indonesia – Torrential rains have triggered flash floods and a landslide on Indonesia’s Sumatra island, killing at least 19 people and leaving seven others missing, officials said Sunday.

Tons of mud, rocks and uprooted trees rolled down a mountain late Friday, reaching a river that burst its banks and tore through mountainsi­de villages in Pesisir Selatan district of West Sumatra province, said Doni Yusrizal, who heads the local disaster management agency.

Rescuers by Saturday pulled out seven bodies in the worst-hit village of Koto XI Tarusan, and recovered three others in two neighborin­g villages, Yusrizal said.

Rescuers retrieved six bodies in Pesisir Selatan and three more in the neighborin­g district of Padang Pariaman, bringing the death toll to 19, the National Disaster Management Agency said on Sunday.

It said more than 80,000 people had fled to temporary government shelters after the flood and landslide buried 14 houses, while 20,000 houses were flooded up to the roof in nine districts and cities in West Sumatra province.
