DENTON — The Town of Denton, in partnership with the Caroline County Public Library, Fireflies Denton and Caroline County Public Schools, took part in National Summer Learning Day Thursday, July 12.

The event strived to increase awareness about the benefits for continuing education during the summer months when children are out of school.

Caroline County Public Library, Fireflies Denton and Caroline County Public Schools all set up tables at the corner of Market and Third streets in downtown Denton with information about summer learning. Firefies Denton member and Denton Elementary

School employee Pamela Smith also read a book to children.

Denton Town Councilmember Doncella Wilson presented a proclamation from the town in support of National Summer Learning Day. Wilson also is the president of Fireflies Denton, which is a youth organization with the goal of being a catalyst to unify community groups to create opportunities for youth and young adults.

“We saw an opportunity to partner with the library to help kids avoid that dip in learning during the summer,” she said. “We always hear teachers talking about the summer slides where teachers have to reteach things for students.

“We want kids to pick up a book and read during the summer to continuing the learning growth,” she said. “After they read the book, then write about the book. Go to the library and research something that you find interesting. Just continue to grow those skills.”

Fireflies Denton have partnered with the Chestertownbased youth organization, the Bayside H.O.Y.A.S., to start a book club. Members from each organization will be reading the book “The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas.

“We just want to keep kids learning throughout the summer,” Wilson said. “Our communities on the Eastern Shore are too small not to connect with each other. We need to have those partnerships. The Bayside H.O.Y.A.S. have been a great partner to us. Together, we all can help kids continue to grow.”
