County fair opens Wed. in Den­ton

— The Caro­line– Dorch­ester County Fair opens Wed­nes­day, Aug. 1, and runs through Satur­day, Aug. 4.

The fair­grounds are lo­cated at the Caro­line County 4-H Park, 8230 De­tour Road, Den­ton.

The of­fers a va­ri­ety of fa­vorites for vis­i­tors of all ages with live­stock ex­hibits and shows, lo­cal arts and craft dis­plays, the Royal Pageant, 4-H ex­hibits, joust­ing and food. The Mary­land Agri­cul­ture Ed­u­ca­tion Trailer will fea­ture hands-on agri­cul­ture ac­tiv­i­ties.

Ad­mis­sion is free the first night of fair, cour­tesy of the Caro­line and Dorch­ester County cham­bers of com­merce. Nagel Crop In­sur­ance will sup­ply free ice cream tick­ets. Open­ing night in­cludes the Royal Pageant at 6 p.m., the out­house races at 7 p.m. and the cake auc­tion at 7:30 p.m.

Chil­dren’s Day is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thurs­day, Au­gust 2. Hands-on ac­tiv­i­ties,

in­ter­ac­tive dis­plays and more will be avail­able.

Thurs­day starts the live­stock com­pe­ti­tions with the goat show at 10 a.m. and the swine show at 5 p.m. There also will be a pet­ting zoo at 5 p.m.

The beef show be­gins at 10 a.m. Fri­day and the horse speed event at 3 p.m. Af­ter the beef show con­cludes, the 4-H win­ners from the goat, swine, sheep and beef shows will com­pete Elite Pre­mier live­stock han­dling show­case. Caro­line County 4-H’er Ben John­son won the 2017 crown.

Also on Fri­day, dress-a-goat con­test will be held at 6 p.m.

The horse show and rab­bit show will each be held at 9 a.m. Satur­day.

Fol­low­ing the 11 a.m. baby con­test on Satur­day, Thomas “Biddy” Trice will host a youth pedal-trac­tor pull, fol­lowed by a wa­ter­melon eat­ing con­test.

The fair cul­mi­nates with the Live­stock Auc­tion at 6 p.m. Satur­day.

The fair’s en­ter­tain­ment lineup will fea­ture The Jones Boys on Thurs­day night, Mike Hines and the Look on Fri­day night, and head­lin­ing en­ter­tainer Sam Grow on Satur­day night. The con­certs starts at 7 p.m. each night.

Ac­tiv­i­ties for kids in­clude the air-con­di­tioned An­chors Aweigh Gam­ing Trailer, a 30-foot col­or­ful video gam­ing trailer boast­ing seven tele­vi­sions, four X-boxes, four PlayS­ta­tion 4’s, two Nin­tendo switches, a vir­tual re­al­ity sta­tion, dance and ac­tiv­ity sta­tion along with satel­lite TV.

Adults can check out the beer gar­den while en­joy­ing the evening en­ter­tain­ment. The fair serves nightly din­ners in­clud­ing fried Chicken Wed­nes­day, crab cakes Thurs­day, pit beef Fri­day and bar­be­cue chicken Satur­day. The din­ners each night are from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
