County fair opens Wed. in Denton
— The Caroline– Dorchester County Fair opens Wednesday, Aug. 1, and runs through Saturday, Aug. 4.
The fairgrounds are located at the Caroline County 4-H Park, 8230 Detour Road, Denton.
The offers a variety of favorites for visitors of all ages with livestock exhibits and shows, local arts and craft displays, the Royal Pageant, 4-H exhibits, jousting and food. The Maryland Agriculture Education Trailer will feature hands-on agriculture activities.
Admission is free the first night of fair, courtesy of the Caroline and Dorchester County chambers of commerce. Nagel Crop Insurance will supply free ice cream tickets. Opening night includes the Royal Pageant at 6 p.m., the outhouse races at 7 p.m. and the cake auction at 7:30 p.m.
Children’s Day is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, August 2. Hands-on activities,
interactive displays and more will be available.
Thursday starts the livestock competitions with the goat show at 10 a.m. and the swine show at 5 p.m. There also will be a petting zoo at 5 p.m.
The beef show begins at 10 a.m. Friday and the horse speed event at 3 p.m. After the beef show concludes, the 4-H winners from the goat, swine, sheep and beef shows will compete Elite Premier livestock handling showcase. Caroline County 4-H’er Ben Johnson won the 2017 crown.
Also on Friday, dress-a-goat contest will be held at 6 p.m.
The horse show and rabbit show will each be held at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Following the 11 a.m. baby contest on Saturday, Thomas “Biddy” Trice will host a youth pedal-tractor pull, followed by a watermelon eating contest.
The fair culminates with the Livestock Auction at 6 p.m. Saturday.
The fair’s entertainment lineup will feature The Jones Boys on Thursday night, Mike Hines and the Look on Friday night, and headlining entertainer Sam Grow on Saturday night. The concerts starts at 7 p.m. each night.
Activities for kids include the air-conditioned Anchors Aweigh Gaming Trailer, a 30-foot colorful video gaming trailer boasting seven televisions, four X-boxes, four PlayStation 4’s, two Nintendo switches, a virtual reality station, dance and activity station along with satellite TV.
Adults can check out the beer garden while enjoying the evening entertainment. The fair serves nightly dinners including fried Chicken Wednesday, crab cakes Thursday, pit beef Friday and barbecue chicken Saturday. The dinners each night are from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
