Colonel beats Perryvile to reach second round
Arnold, Todd net goals, as Colonels eliminate Panthers
AMERICAN CORNER — The fourth-seeded Colonel Richardson High boys’ soccer team advanced in the Class 1A East Section I semifinals Thursday with a 2-0 victory over No. 5 Perryville.
Sam Arnold opened the scoring in the first half on a penalty kick, and Conner Todd added a goal midway through the second half.
Colonel (7-5-1) travels to top-seeded Patterson Mill on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. semifinal.
“Being a playoff game, we started conservative, but really got going as the first half went on,” Colonel head coach Ryan Blanchfield said. “Once we got the PK, we loosened up, and began playing our game. I’m happy for my seniors to get the win in their last home game”
The scoring opportunity came in the 23rd minute when Colonel’s Harley Maldonado took a lead pass and raced toward the goal. As he entered the box, he got tripped from behind, setting up the penalty kick.
Arnold’s number got called, and he delivered a goal for a 1-0 lead.
“Sam is lethal with PKs,” Blanchfield said. “We work on it at the end of practice, and he is always scoring. He scored the PK earlier this year in our win against North Caroline.
“He is one of the best leaders I’ve ever had — him and Garrett Nepert,” Blanchfield added of Arnold. “We have faith in him. He is our go-to guy.”
After the half, the Panthers gained momentum with rushes by Greg Riley Jr. and Nick Romano. Colonel’s back line of Colby Rickwood, Karl Banks, Josh Saunders and Arnold foiled Perryville’s attack by cutting off alleys to the net.
“Colby and Karl played well together,” Blanchfield said. “Sam is the glue back there as the sweeper. Saunders at the top of the diamond played really well.”
The Colonels kept stretching the field with their counterattacks, earning several corner kicks and throw-ins near the goal.
Todd converted a throwin for the second goal when a Tanny Pierre-Louis pass found open space. Todd crashed the net, and scored with a stretching left-footer for a 2-0 lead.
“Conner stepped up in a big spot for us,” Blanchfield said. “He works his tail off. It was huge. Conner Todd proves to you hard work pays off.”
Colonel goalkeeper Brennen Wright stopped all eight shots he faced to earn a shutout.
