Lewis named Se­nior Ci­ti­zen of the Year

DEN­TON — Robert “Bob” Lewis of Den­ton was one of 50 hon­orees in­ducted into the Mary­land Se­nior Cit­i­zens Hall of Fame for the year 2018.

The in­duc­tion cer­e­mony and lun­cheon was held on Thurs­day, Oct. 25, at Michael’s Eighth Av­enue in Glen Burnie.

Each in­ductee re­ceived a mem­ber­ship cer­tifi­cate, MSCHF lapel pin, and copy of the Blue Book that in­cludes the name, pic­ture and a brief summary of vol­un­teer ser­vice for each of the 2018 hon­orees.

A copy of the Blue Book is kept in the ar­chives at the Langs­dale Li­brar y, Univer­sity of Bal­ti­more.

The Mary­land Se­nior Cit­i­zens Hall of Fame, Inc. is a pri­vate, all-vol­un­teer or­ga­ni­za­tion that has been func­tion­ing since 1987. The sole pur­pose of the or­ga­ni­za­tion is to an­nu­ally rec­og­nize and honor in­di­vid­ual se­nior Mary­land res­i­dents who are at least 65 years of age and have per­formed out­stand­ing ser­vice in their com­mu­ni­ties.

In ad­di­tion, Lewis was one of five re­cip­i­ents of the GERI sculp­ture. The GERI is awarded to those hon­orees demon­strat­ing ex­tra­or­di­nary com­mu­nity ser­vice.

Lewis was nom­i­nated pri­mar­ily for out­stand­ing ser­vice to Re­build­ing To­gether Caro­line County, a Caro­line County based all-vol­un­teer non-profit pro­vid­ing free home­owner ser­vices to the el­derly, dis­abled, vet­er­ans and fam­i­lies with chil­dren in Caro­line County fac­ing nec­es­sary but un­af­ford­able re­pairs or im­prove­ments to their dwellings.

Lewis set up the trea­sury for Re­build­ing To­gether Caro­line County and con­tin­ues to serve as its trea­surer. As a re­tired en­gi­neer, Lewis, “the “Ramp­meis­ter” has cre­ated elab­o­rately de­tailed blue­prints prior to con­struct­ing ramps for low in­come home­own­ers.

Lewis is ac­tive in St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Den­ton. He has built houses in Costa Rica and has also worked in hur­ri­cane re­lief in North Carolina with The United Methodist Church.

Lewis has vol­un­teered with Den­ton Boy Scout Troop #165, Part­ners in Care Up­per Shore and serves on the board at St. Mar­tin’s Min­istries in Ridgely.

Lewis was se­lected as 2016’s Caro­line’s Most Beau­ti­ful Vol­un­teer and hon­ored by Caro­line County and the State of Mar yland for his valu­able vol­un­teer con­tri­bu­tions within the county.
