Garden club stays busy this season
DENTON — The members of Caroline County Garden Club have been busy this holiday season, continuing the club’s longstanding tradition of decorating locations throughout the county for the county’s residents and others to enjoy.
The activities began Nov. 26 at a workshop at the home of Darlene Clopper of Denton, attended by 22 members who decorated wreaths for the county courthouse, the Rural Life Museum and the Caroline County Library in Denton.
Several members also designed 40 small floral arrangements that were distributed to residents of two local nursing homes.
Later that week, several members traveled to Annapolis to deliver a decorated tree to the State House. The ornaments on the tree represented the rich agricultural and recreational heritage of the “Green Garden County.”
On Dec. 7, several club members decorated a local residence with lovely wreaths and greens for the Caroline County Historical Society’s annual Holiday Gala.
Rounding out the year’s club activities, members participated in National Wreaths Across America on Dec. 15 at the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery in Hurlock.
In addition to donating to this project, members also were present to lay wreaths at the veterans’ graves, following a brief ceremony honoring our veterans. There are more than 7,000 graves at the cemetery and, thanks to fundraising by the Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland District 1 (Eastern Shore) and local American Legion posts, there was a wreath for every grave.
The club looks forward to continuing its objectives of beautification of home, town and county in the new year, as well as conserving the natural beauty of our county.
