Firearms violence: Why aren’t we talking about it?

- Jennifer Jones, Ferndale

I go to work everyday with over 320 people. We work in a place that is under assault across the nation. All of the assaults and murders have been committed using firearms.

We drill three times a year for an attack on our work place. Do you? Two weeks ago, in Saugus, California, two children were killed at a similar work place and three were injured, the assailant died that Friday yet it’s out of the news already. Sunday, I called a friend who worked there and she was still unable to talk about the bloodbath and the dead kids. Why aren’t we all talking about it?

I don’t hear politicians either, whether local or nationally, actively planning to do ANYTHING about these kind of attacks, this kind of domestic terrorism and psychosis. Every death is unacceptable!

Last year, according to FEMA, there were 98 incidents at similar work places, not all resulting in deaths. So, do you want to work with me?

I am a teacher at a K-8 public school. I work with your children.

Stop the deaths, stop the fear, help us teach and not hide under our desks. Join a local group or national group for sensible gun laws like Momsdemandaction.org. Also, write letters to your reps for mental health support in our schools.
