We have the power to make the holidays better

- Larry DePuy, Eureka

I fear we have reached the point where we will start calling Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday Eve or just Black Thursday and Christmas as Consumer Gift Giving Day. To me Thanksgiving should be a day where families and friends get together, eat too much food, go to bed early and look forward to turkey sandwiches the next day, instead of rushing off to work for shopping madness and consumer gluttony. And Christmas, really a celebration of the winter solstice and increasing daylight, should be a time to appreciate all the good that surrounds us and de-stress just a little. Holidays are a time to renew ties to family and friends and reminisce about memorable times of yore and remember those who have been taken from us. Shoppers can control businesses by simply buying what they want when they want. We have the power to make the holidays better. Well, maybe next year.
