NCS D5: No. 2 Del Norte 28 No. 3 Moreau Catholic 7

Del Norte’s Kobe Mitchell scooped up a fumble and returned it 5 yards for a touchdown with under five minutes to play, sealing a 28-7 North Coast Section Division 5 semifinal win over Moreau Catholic, Saturday night at Mike Whalen Field in Crescent City.

Mitchell also scored a on a 3-yard run late in the first-quarter. Quarterbac­k OJ Calleja found the endzone twice for the Warriors, once in the first frame and again in the third on a pair of 1 yard runs.

With Saturday’s win Del Norte advances to its first-ever NCS title game. The Warriors will face No. 1 Encinal, Friday night in Alameda.

Women’s college basketball: Humboldt 72 Cal State LA 70

Alexia Thrower made a layup with 15 seconds remaining to break a 70-70 tie and lift the Humboldt State women’s basketball team to a 72-70 win over Cal State LA, Saturday night at Lumberjack Arena.

Thrower led Humboldt (4-1, 2-0) with a monster stat line — 23 points and 15 rebounds — and played every minute of Saturday’s CCAA conference game.

Tyra Turner, in her second game back from injury, played all 40 minutes as well and scored a season-high 14 points to go with 10 assists.

Sandin Kidder scored 11 points for Humboldt in the win and Gabrielle Carbajal, 10. The ‘Jacks will get back to work on Friday, at home against Notre Dame de Namur.

Men’s college basketball: Humboldt 93 Cal State LA 81

Don’t let the score fool you, Saturday’s game between the Humboldt State men’s basketball team and visiting Cal State LA was anything but a comfortabl­e ride for the ‘Jacks.

Humboldt trailed for the majority of Saturday’s game. With just over 17 minutes to play in the second-half the ‘Jacks trailed 53-38.

Humboldt (4-2, 1-1) outscored Cal State LA 55-28 down the stretch to pick up CCAA conference win No. 1 of the season.

Robert Lewis and Jackson Strong each scored 21 points to lead the ‘Jacks. Strong made 5 3-pointers in the win while Lewis led the ‘Jacks with 11 rebounds.

Leland Green returned to form with 16 points while Isaiah Sampson, in his first start of the season, scored 11 points.

Humboldt returns to action Saturday, at home against Portland Bible College.

Prep girls basketball: Pinole Valley 49 Eureka 45

Malia Guilbert scored 18 points and nabbed 10 rebounds, an effort which nearly saw Eureka top

Pinole Valley in what was a 49-45 road-loss Saturday afternoon.

Sophia Chalmers scored 12 points for the Loggers in the loss while Carly Boynton finished with 6 points.

Eureka returns to action on Tuesday, at home against Hoopa Valley in what will be a foundation game (i.e. a game which does not count towards a team’s record).

Women’s JC basketball: Redwoods 113 Hartnell 43

Every woman suited up in Redwoods red and white put points on the board as the College of the Redwoods women’s basketball team dominated Hartnell College in a 113-43 road-win Saturday night.

Ashley Quigley, as she

has in all but one of Redwoods’ (4-2) games this season, led the team in scoring with 19 points. Brianna Finney added 15 more and Juliana Ortega-Miranda, 14. Dennise Horton and Breesia Northern each poured in 12 points for Redwoods and Theresia Dickey scored a season-high 11 in the win.

Redwoods returns to action today, on the road at San Mateo College.

Tomlinson earns recognitio­n

St. Bernard’s Academy’s girls soccer’s Marayah Tomlinson was named one of two High School Players of the Week by the MaxPreps United Soccer Coaches poll for the week of Nov. 11-17.

Tomlinson netted a hattrick for St. Bernard’s in its 3-2 North Coast Section Division 3 championsh­ip game win over Technology.

Tomlinson scored 11 of the Crusaders’ 30 goals in

2019.

Cross country: Tull places 56th at nationals

The Humboldt State University cross country team’s Daniel Tull ran a 10K time of 31:03.5 to finish 56th out of 263 runners at the 2019 NCAA Division II Men’s Cross Country Championsh­ips, Saturday morning at the Arcade Creek Cross Country Course in Sacramento, American Internatio­nal’s Ezra Mutai won the race with a time of 29:31.2. Colorado School of Mines captured the team title with 57 points. Tull finished 20 seconds off of 40th-place, the cutoff for earning AllAmerica­n recognitio­n.
