Soroptimists honor 3 ‘Girls of the Month’
Soroptimist Eel River Valley has named Petrita Rodriguez, Shanah James and Kreada Foust as its “Girls of the Month.”
A senior at Fortuna Union High School, Rodriguez is the daughter of Maria Hernandez and Juan Rodriguez. She was named a Times-Standard Super Student of the Month and has earned an Academic Excellence Award in AP Spanish, algebra, world history and Native Speakers (Spanish). She is sergeant of arms for the M.E.Ch.A. Club, which is dedicated to fundraising and planning events for the Latino community. She is a member of Interact and is part of the Creeks Club, which helps clean up the environment.
Rodriguez — who is being recognized for academics — hopes to attend UC Davis or Stanford University to major in aerospace or chemical engineering.
James is the daughter of Henry James. She is a senior at East High School and enjoys playing sports, especially softball and volleyball. She has coordinated the school’s blood drive and was involved with the beach cleanup. She reads to the Hydesville Elementary School students one day a week and was recognized as a Citizen of the Week.
After graduation, James plans to attend College of the Redwoods and hopes to make the school’s softball team. After attending CR, James, who is being recognized for academics, plans to get involved with social work.
Foust, daughter of Darrell Foust, is a senior at East High School. She is being honored for community service. She volunteers with Meals on Wheels, walks dogs at Miranda’s Rescue and reads to the students at Hydesville Elementary School. She is one of two high school students on the advisory board for the Gene Lucas Community Center and represents East High at school board meetings. Foust’s future plans include earning a doctorate in psychology and then becoming a counselor.
