Rose society offers free pruning demos

-

The Humboldt Rose Society will offer its first rose pruning demonstration of 2020 at Miller Farms Nursery in McKinleyville on Jan. 11 at 10 a.m. Two other free rose pruning workshops are planned throughout the month as well.

The Humboldt Rose Society’s Rosarians (master rose growers) will explain and show how to correctly prune roses. Participating nurseries would appreciate (but do not require) a call so that adequate seating will be available.

The demo schedule is:

• Jan. 11, Miller Farms Nursery, 1828 Central Ave., McKinleyville, 707-839-1571, ext. 5. 10 a.m.

• Jan. 18, Shafer’s Ace Hardware and Nursery, 2760 E St., Eureka, 707-442-5734. 10 a.m.

• Jan. 25, Pierson’s Garden Shop, 4100 Broadway, Eureka, 707-441-2713. 10 a.m.

Dates have not been set yet for the pruning demonstration at the Humboldt Botanical Garden or the Humboldt Rose Society garden at Redwood Acres. The HRS Garden demonstration is “hands on” with participants practicing in a real garden, one on one, with an expert. At this event, pruners are sharpened at no charge.

Time for general questions about rose selection and maintenance is included during the demonstration. The HRS members providing the demos are Rosarians who have received special training and certification by the American Rose Society.

For more information about the Humboldt Rose Society or these presentations, call 707764-5578 or go to www.humboldtrose.org. Those who are interested in cultivating their knowledge of roses along with their roses are encouraged to join the Humboldt Rose Society. Annual dues are $20 for an individual or $25 for a family. The application is available at the website above.
