FRIDAY BACK TO KIDCO Arcata:

Join the Humboldt Light Opera Company for “Back to KidCo Night,” a family fun evening Friday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at The SPACE, 92Sunny Brae Center. Saturday BREAKFAST SERVED Eureka:

Humboldt Grange No. 501will host its first meal of the 2020breakf­ast season on Saturday from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Breakfast is now served buffet style and will include scrambled eggs, ham or sausage links or patties, an egg special, and biscuits and gravy. The cost is $3for a small breakfast, $5for a large breakfast and $3 to go through the buffet line a second time. Volunteers are also needed. MARSH FIELD TRIP Arcata:

The Redwood Region Audubon Society is sponsoring a free public field trip at the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday. Bring binoculars for birding and meet leader Rob Fowler in the parking lot at the end of South I Street (Klopp Lake) in Arcata at 8:30 a.m., rain or shine. The trip ends around 11 a.m.

The Humboldt County Chess Club will meet Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Christ the Redeemer Reformed Presbyteri­an Church, 1427 California St. Everyone is welcome to bring a tournament chess board and clock if they have them available. For more informatio­n, call Tom Wynne at 432-599-1727.

WETLANDS WORKDAY Eureka:

Join members of the Redwood Region Audubon Society for a “Wigi Wetlands Volunteer Workday” on Saturday. Help restore bird-friendly habitat by removing large swathes of scotch broom and other invasive plant species, as well as trash, from a stretch of the bay trail right behind the Bayshore Mall. Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. at the back of parking lot between Kohl’s and Sportsman’s Warehouse. Tools and gloves will be provided, or bring your own. TRAIL WORKDAY Arcata:

The city of Arcata’s Environmen­tal Services Department and the Humboldt Trails Council Volunteer Trail Stewards are seeking volunteers to assist with maintainin­g the Humboldt Bay Trail North on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers will be removing invasive roots and species, weed whacking and cleaning up the Humboldt Bay Trail North beginning at the southernmo­st end of the trail through the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary and concluding work in the Creamery District. All ages are welcome, and work will take place rain or shine. There will be a variety of tasks to be completed, so volunteers will be able to select the work that best fits their comfort level. Participan­ts are asked to meet at 9 a.m. at the volunteer staging area in front of the city of Arcata’s Corporatio­n Yard, 600 South G St. Volunteers who plan on driving are asked to park in the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary parking lot located on South G Street and walk to the staging area. Participan­ts are encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle, gloves and to wear protective footwear and clothing. POET TO SPEAK Samoa:

Poet David Holper will be the speaker at a Northcoast Mensa forum at noon Saturday at the Samoa Cookhouse. His talk is titled “A Look at Poetry.” Lunch is no-host and the public is welcome. Holper, who teaches at College of the Redwoods, was selected as Eureka’s first poet laureate last year. He has published two books of poetry, “The Bridge” and “64Question­s,” and his poems have appeared in several literary publicatio­ns. He has taught English for 31 years.

MARSH TOUR Arcata:

Friends of the Arcata Marsh is sponsoring a free tour of the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday at 2p.m. Meet leader Lynn Jones at the Arcata Marsh Interpreti­ve Center on South G Street for a 90-minute walk focusing on the history and plants of the marsh. Sunday PANCAKES, BOOKS Trinidad:

The Trinidad Lions Club will hold the first pancake breakfast and book sale of the year Sunday from 8 to 11 a.m. at Trinidad School. The menu includes pancakes and eggs, a choice of ham or sausage or biscuits and gravy and eggs and a beverage. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children. Hardback books are $1, paperbacks are 50 cents and children’s books are 25 cents. Proceeds benefit youth, community and school projects. White Cane donations will also be accepted.
