Soroptimists donate library books to some local schools
Soroptimist International of Eel River Valley thinks that “Librarians Rock.” This was the theme for this year’s book project/library breakfast, held Jan. 14 at the Fortuna United Methodist Church.
For over 25 years, library books have been donated by the Soroptimists to elementary schools and high schools throughout the greater Eel River Valley. The books are distributed at the breakfast with the librarians and/or their administrators receiving the books.
A total of 94 books to 14 schools were distributed this year. The recipient schools were Bridgeville Elementary, Cuddeback Elementary, East High School, Ferndale Elementary, Fortuna Middle School, South Fortuna Elementary, Fortuna High School, Hydesville Grade School, Loleta Grade School, Norman Ambrosini Elementary, South Bay Elementary, Pine Hill Elementary, Stanwood A. Murphy Elementary and Toddy Thomas Elementary.
In addition to this local project, Soroptimist International of Eel River
Valley helps with flags on Main Street; recognizes local high school girls for their community service, academic and sports achievements; donates to the local Shoe Box program; joins with the Lions to provide an Easter egg hunt in Fortuna at the city park; and rings the bell to help fill the kettle for the Salvation Army at Christmastime. They also help raise awareness about human trafficking, volunteer at the ice rink and the dog show in Ferndale, along with quarterly Bunco parties in Fortuna, to raise funds for their monetary awards given annually.
The annual Sips for Soroptimists Tea will be held in March at the River Lodge in Fortuna. This fundraiser features a fashion show, decorated tables and lots of food and tea, along with a silent auction.
The Soroptimists International of Eel River Valley work to help improve the lives of women and girls locally and throughout the world.
