Dennise Horton scored 17 points and No. 18 College of the Redwoods women’s basketball took care of business as the Corsairs stormed to an easy victory over visiting Golden Valley Conference foe College of the Siskiyous 88-67, Wednesday night at home.

A balanced scoring attack and a stifling full-court press forced numerous Siskiyous turnovers and kept momentum solely with the Corsairs’ (154, 3-1) for most of the game. The victory moves Redwoods to the top of the GVC standings and validates a program that moved into the top 20 of the most recent CCCSIA Women’s Basketball Poll on Jan. 20.

“CR has not beat Siskiyous since I played in 2011, 2012,” Redwoods head coach Jain Tuey said. “Tom Powers and Jerry Brown , those two coaches were coaching when I played, so my goal is to beat both of them.

“I almost feel like we always still have something to prove,” the coach said. “solidifies that we are not a joke. We’re here to win it. We’re here to be GVC champs and we should be ranked in the state and where we’re at in the north. I do think it gives us that confidence and solidifies where we are at.”

Siskiyous (13-7, 1-1) jumped out to an early 11-4 lead with quick scoring by guard Anhelica Shanrock. Redwoods responded with a run of their own, rattling off six unanswered points to cut the lead to one point just a little over halfway through the first quarter. A 3-pointer from ‘Woods guard Ashley Quigley tied the game up at 15. From there, the Corsairs controlled the remainder of the quarter, keeping the Eagles scoreless for the final three minutes to end the first frame up by 11 points.

A 3-point play by Horton ignited a 7-0 run for Redwoods after early baskets by Siskiyous forward

Ashley Cox and guard Lynden Harry cut the lead down to seven at the beginning of the second quarter. A 3-point play by Harry brought the lead down to nine, but another Quigley 3-pointer drove the gap back up to double digits, where it would remain for the rest of the contest as Redwoods entered the half with a commanding 5033 advantage.

Redwoods went on to outscore their opponents 26-15 in the third quarter and 38-34 over the final half to put the game away early. Freshman forward Julianna

Ortega-Miranda exploded for 10 secondhalf points as the Corsairs cruised to victory.

Five Redwoods women scored in double digits, led by Horton’s 17 points and Quigley’s 16 points off of four 3-pointers. Ortega-Miranda scored 14 off the bench, forward Darienne Kartes scored 13 and guard Theresa Dickey chipped in 12.

Shanrock led all scorers with 25 points, while Harry dropped another 18 to lead the Eagles.
