Wildcats bow out of NorCals

The No. 4 Ferndale High boys basketball team’s season came to a close Saturday night with a 55-32 loss at No. 1 Weed in the semifinal-round of the NorCal Division 6 playoffs.

Emmitt Albee and Javier Lopez each scored seven points for Ferndale (20-12) in the loss. Weed was led by Grant Lane and Dallas Lane, who scored 19 and 17 points respective­ly.

Ferndale previously this season captured the North Coast Section D-6 crown with a 60-42 win at California School for the Deaf, the program’s fourth NCS title.

HSU softball rallies to claim series win at East Bay

Humboldt State softball’s 4-game series at CCAA foe Cal State East Bay started off with the ‘Jacks eighth-straight loss.

And then the Green and Gold bullied their way to back-to-back blowout wins — 16-0 (6) and 17-1 (5) — before capping off the 3-1 series win with a 9-8 (9) victory in extra-innings on Saturday.

Lexee Sheiring was the unquestion­able MVP of the weekend for HSU.

Sheiring picked up the win at pitcher in all three ‘Jacks’ wins. At the plate Sheiring delivered a grandslam in the opener on Friday and hit another home run in the night cap, and finished off the weekend by driving in Micaela Harris on a walk-off RBI single in the top of the ninth-inning.

On Saturday Izzy Starr tallied five hits including two home runs, and notched four RBIs while scoring five runs.

Humboldt (7-16, 6-14) will host Stanislaus State for a 4-game series beginning Friday.

Loggers split weekend slate

The Eureka High baseball team beat San Marin 4-1 Friday afternoon before finishing its weekend slate with a 3-1 loss at San Rafael.

Hayden Bode picked up the win at pitcher on Friday for his three strikeouts and one unearned run in five innings of work. Parker Rodgers went 2-for-4 at the dish with three RBIs on Friday.

Nate Fowler gave up no earned runs in four innings pitched on Saturday, but took the loss as all three of San Rafael’s runs came unearned. Rodgers had another two hits in the loss and drove in Keenan Morris for Eureka’s lone run.

The Loggers are 1-3 overall.

Huskies roll Lower Lake

Fortuna kicked off its 2020 season with a pair of blowout wins at Lower Lake on Saturday.

Fortuna (2-0) downed Lower Lake 10-2 in game on and 15-1 in the late game.

Branson Gans picked up the win at pitcher in game one and Wyatt Wilson, the win in game two.

Gans had six hits on the afternoon as did Daeden Taylor while Wilson and Regan Nyberg each had five.

CR baseball

The College of the Redwoods baseball team saw its losing streak reach 12 games on Friday as the Corsairs lost 4-2 and 16-6 at Golden Valley Conference opponent Feather River.

Redwoods (7-15) lost the 3-game series-opener 17-3 on Thursday.
