Arcata students to present ‘Rent’
The Arcata Arts Institute will present “Rent School Edition,” a rock musical with music, lyrics and book by Jonathan Larson, adapted from the Pulitzer Prize and four-time Tony Award winning play “Rent.”
Based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera “La Bohème,” “Rent School Edition” tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists struggling to survive and create a life in Lower Manhattan’s East Village, under the shadow of HIV/ AIDS. Directed by Melanie Zapper, with musical direction by Jo Kuzelka, “Rent School Edition” tackles topics of gentrification, substance abuse, healthy relationships, and most importantly, love. This version, while specifically adapted to be suitable for the high school stage, does contain mature themes and language. It is recommended that audience members be over the age of 13, or with guardian permission.
With musical arrangements by Steve Skinner, original concept and additional lyrics by Billy Aronson and Lynn Thomson
as the dramaturg, “Rent School Edition” runs March 26 and 27 and April 2 through 4 at 7 pm with a matinee showing March 28 at 2 p.m. Performances are $12 for students and seniors, or $15 general. There is an opening night special. Advanced tickets are available at https://tinyurl. com/AAIRent or at Wildberries in Arcata.
