Arcata students to present ‘Rent’

The Arcata Arts Institute will present “Rent School Edition,” a rock musical with music, lyrics and book by Jonathan Larson, adapted from the Pulitzer Prize and four-time Tony Award winning play “Rent.”

Based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera “La Bohème,” “Rent School Edition” tells the story of a group of impoverish­ed young artists struggling to survive and create a life in Lower Manhattan’s East Village, under the shadow of HIV/ AIDS. Directed by Melanie Zapper, with musical direction by Jo Kuzelka, “Rent School Edition” tackles topics of gentrifica­tion, substance abuse, healthy relationsh­ips, and most importantl­y, love. This version, while specifical­ly adapted to be suitable for the high school stage, does contain mature themes and language. It is recommende­d that audience members be over the age of 13, or with guardian permission.

as the dramaturg, “Rent School Edition” runs March 26 and 27 and April 2 through 4 at 7 pm with a matinee showing March 28 at 2 p.m. Performanc­es are $12 for students and seniors, or $15 general.
