Coming Up ON MARINE ANIMALS Arcata:

On March 20, Humboldt State University biology professor Sean Craig will give a program on marine animals in the aerobic and anaerobic mud of Humboldt Bay. Infaunal marine invertebrates living in the mud or epifuanal invertebrates on the surface of the mud often are overlooked, especially by birdwatchers, but play an important role in soft sediment communities. This talk will touch upon bivalves, innkeeper worms, crustaceans, and other mud-dwelling invertebrates and their connections to higher trophic levels (e.g., birds), as well as to the water column above them. Craig teaches classes in zoology, intertidal ecology and an occasional seminar on invasive species. His research focuses on the community ecology of marine protected areas on rocky and sandy shores, as well as in subtidal kelp beds. This free public lecture, starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center, is sponsored by Friends of the Arcata Marsh. Seating is limited to the first 50 attendees on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, call 707-8262359.
