49ers bringing back Super Bowl starter Garland

- By Cam Inman

Ben Garland, the 49ers’ starting center in Super Bowl LIV, has agreed to return on a oneyear, $2.25 million deal, according to a league source.

Garland replaced an injured Weston Richburg at center for the final three regular season games and the 49ers’ three playoff games. Garland also served as the first-team center much of the offseason program and training camp while Richburg rehabilitated a leg injury.

A similar scenario could unfold entering this season as Garland fills in for a recovering Richburg, who sustained a torn patellar tendon in a Dec. 8 win at New Orleans. The NFL Network first reported terms of Garland’s new deal, a raise from last year’s $805,000 salary.

All seven 49ers offensive linemen who suited up for the Super Bowl are now under contract for this coming season, as is Richburg and backup offensive tackle Shon Coleman, who agreed Monday to re-sign on a one-year deal. Garland will compete with backups Justin Skule and Daniel Brunskill.

Garland is a six-year veteran who joined the 49ers last year after playing with the Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons.

The 49ers made moves earlier this week to retain defensive tackle Arik Armstead, free safety Jimmie Ward, defensive end Ronald Blair, offensive tackle Shon Coleman, wide

receiver Kendrick Bourne (tendered) and running backs Jerick McKinnon

and Matt Breida.

The only 49ers known to be departing is defensive tackle DeForest Buckner (Indianapolis Colts; traded) and Levine Toilolo (New York Giants).
